I was just looking through my collection of Matchbox, et al that were my beat up old cars from childhood (I used to tape my name to the bottom of them and carry at least two of them in my pocket to kindergarten and 1st grade). Some of the cars were by Playart and what struck me as funny was that back in the early 70s, even then, my child brain recognized these as being not as good as the Matchbox or Hot Wheels brand, but looking at them today; those cars are looking superior to the mostly plastic Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars that my son has today. You don't really see the hoods or doors that open anymore and stuff like that. My son definitely loves his current ones, though.

Play Art, Zylmex, Road Champs and Husky were all great cars that are less than the hotwheels and matchbox we remember but far superior to the ones of today. You can find these at flea markets and pretty inexpensive.
My favorite from back then was Tomy or Tomica. The cars had superior quality that rivaled hotwheels but they did common cars. They were much less popular and still are today. But they always remind me of the lesney matchbox transitional models with the thin superfast wheels.
Play Art did a nice batmobile in a couple different versions. The smaller one seems to be most disirable. It was just slightly smaller than Husky's/Corgi Jr.'s version with red or gray people.Comment
