Hardy Boys by Kenner

[RSS]

The 1977 ABC TV series made the then fifty year old characters of Joe and Frank Hardy into super styling studs of the late seventies. These teen heart throbs didn't go unnoticed by the good people at Kenner (seeing as they had more than their fair share of success with another ABC series) and in 1978, these two action figures appeared.


Shaun Cassidy comes with a guitar, woooo!




Parker Stevenson gets a radio backpack, which is neat but not as cool as a guitar.

I rember the TV series but i don't rember the action figures but then as now no thanks give me the six millon doolar man instead

So you beat The HardyGirl! I was busy watching a movie. The Shaun figure depicted is a prototype, (which I believe looks closer to the Star Wars 12" Luke Skywalker figure by Kenner). The real Shaun doll has a red jacket, silver and red guitar, and was available in blonde or brown hair that was longer than the prototype (brown was more common). I even have the commercial on video. Surprisingly, they were marketed for boys. (yeah right!, You know the girls bought these and played Shaun Cassidy concert! Ok, so I still do that sometimes!) The Parker doll was released first, as I believe there were some issues w/ the prototype.

Yes, I do have both blondie and brownie proudly displayed in my toyroom!

Didn't Lee's do a photo story years ago about infamous super-rare Empire Stikes Back Lando figure --- which was just a HB Stevenson doll repainted ?

I really like how everything Kenner did in the 70s (pre-Star Wars) followed the Six Million Dollar Man packaging format!

Interesting. Is one harder to find than the other? Are they pricey or common?

Boxed ones are of course more expensive. I usually see more Shaun dolls than Parker (but then, I already have one, and I'm not much of a Parker fan, so I don't look), and brown haired Shauns are more common than blondes. There are some folks that try to pass off Luke Skywalker as Shaun based on that prototype. (there was actually and Ebay seller who argued this point w/ me to the point of rude!)

My sister had these, and the Mattel Donnie and Marie, and the Hasbro Charlie's Angels. With all of those and my Happy Days Fonz, we pretty much had an action figure of everyone on network TV at the time!

Interesting info on this line HG. Not something I'd ever collect, but fun to know just the same.

Very cool. I never knew about these figures. I did watch the show everytime it was on.

I have the article in a mag saying that delay of production was because of Shaun Cassidy making a big fuss at Kenner, saying he didnt agree with the sculpting of the dolls head and had to be done three times before he approved it!!!,...man,..he sure was picky when coming to find his likeness portrayed on an action figure! (if you call it an action figure)

I don't recall these at all....although the TV show was a Sunday night tradition and I was a big fan of the books.

I really liked the show, and collect the books. I've yet to get the figures, but plan to.
