Moebius Models Monster Scene kits, a review.

    So;

I finished the first couple of Moebius reissue kits, and they look real good. Somebody must have done a LOT of work retooling these, 'cos I think they're a little more solid than the originals. They build up pretty easy, too.

Here's an example: The Giant Insect, who's name is apparently Ignatz:

I'm glad they redid this one. It was my favourite as a kid (I went thorugh a few of them) and it's one of the rarest of the set to find an original of. (I saw one MIB that was selling for $6000.) The last time I saw one was '82 or so. A store in Toronto ("The Science Shop" if memory serves....) had a display with several attacking a model airport.

    I've also finished Doctor Deadly:

Another kit I haven't seen since I was a kid. He no doubt turned out a lot better than my original. (What can I say, I was 3.) He's a very well sculpted kit, too.

I'm hoping they do the rest of the series now, especially the rare second series. (AND the Animal Pit and Dungeon.... I've got the resin recast of the Animal Pit and it's a nightmare to build!)

    ....I NEED that saber-toothed rabbit....

....funny thing about the Insect; I saw designs for a prototype beetle that was gonna be mase as a mount for Vampirella. Ignatz's neck is saddle shaped; so I'm wondering if he was meant as the same.

That sounds like the design sketch that can be found on the Parts Pit website.

For anyone not familiar with the series.
I have a section of my site devoted to them.
      Monster Scenes

I haven't been able to pick any of them up yet.
Hoping to when I get my tax return. If not, I will probably grab some at Wonderfest this year.
But I do hope they sell well enough to see the Dungeon and Animal Pit in styrene.

Yeah! That's it! I wonder if Ignatz's neck is SUPPOSED to be saddle-like, but they dumped the idea of the extra legs that would fit after designing him.

          >I do hope they sell well enough to see the Dungeon and Animal Pit in styrene.

So do I, especially if they can get their mitts on some original parts to use. The resin ones are neat but there are a lot of parts that couldn't be cast in resin and had to be modified; and some of 'em are tough to put together. The stairs on the Pit come to mind.

....and it may be farfetched; but I would love to see styrene issues of the add-ons. (Which I sadly missed.)

Actually, the resin kits are based on test shots from the actual molds that Revell still have.
The only problem is, the molds are not complete. Which is why those 2 kits have never been done in styrene. Revell discovered this when they ran their test shots. I can't remember exactly what is missing, but I know all the clear parts are not present at all. Either those molds never got made, or they got scrapped somewhere down the line.

I hold out hope that there will be enough demand that Frank at Moebius will pull the project off. Probably commision Revell to run the parts they can, and have tooling made for the missing parts.

                  Great paint job on those.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

                    Oh yeah.
I forgot to mention how much I like your paint job on those kits.
                    Very nicely done.
Well detailed without being too busy or messy.
Definitely something to be proud of.

                      Hmmmm....

I tried to make 'em as close to the box art as possible; so I didn't do too much modifying or anything. They're super-easy to paint; especially if you can do some basic techniques like drybrushing and balanced washes. Ignatz has a lot of big, open areas; so I airbrushed his body. They'd be awesome kits for someone just starting out on character or monster kits.

I love the add on kits people are doing; the Monster Scene ones all look like they could have been done by Aurora back in the day; and the dinosaur ones are all awesome! Being kinda poor, I've been resisting the urge to get into them.... but being a completist it's kinda hard to resist.

HOWEVER.... I DO plan on making 8" Mego scaled versions of the Monster Scenes characters and settings. It's my hope to one day have everything cool in 8" scale.
