Thankfully! The classic 5 (Big Bird, Ernie, Bert, Oscar and Cookie Monster) take such a backseat to Elmo in today's day and age I find it very disgusting.

I would have to add 2 your your classic 5 and make it classic 7. They are Grover a.k.a Super Grover, and Kermit the frog; ace reporter for Sesame Street News. At least Kermit was smart enought to leave Sesame Street before Elmo arrived.

^ I didn't count Grover because he was not a member of the original cast. And Kermit was a transplant from previous Muppet ventures. To me, the classic 5 are the iconic Sesame Street characters...the original starting line-up if you will and what I first remember about Sesame Street. Other great characters like Grover, Harry Monster, The Count, Sherlock Hemlock, Roosevelt Franklin, Guy Smiley came a little bit later.

Yes the design was there but he wasn't the "loveable" Grover we know today...he was one of the more unlikable background monsters if I recall, along with another blue monster (pre-Harry) that had some sort of lips that remind me of Edward G. Robinson.

I don't recall if they ever explained why (in the context of the show) Oscar's coloring changed...probably not.

While Jim Henson's first Oscar sketches were colored purple, the original Oscar puppet was orange. In chapter nine of the book The Wisdom of Big Bird, Caroll Spinney states that the Oscar puppet was rebuilt about a month after Sesame Street had started taping. Jim tore apart the original puppet, and a new puppet was built. An early version of the green Oscar debuted on The Flip Wilson Show in 1970 and Oscar's explanation for that was that he had vacationed at Swamp Mushy Muddy, where the dampness had turned him green overnight. In a 2003 appearance, Oscar stated that while his time in Swamp Mushy Muddy made him appear green, he is still in fact orange underneath all the slime and mold. (He's just never taken a bath).

Hot first hand, I show Sesame Street later on PBS. However I do own the Sesame Street Old School Vol 1 that has the very first episode with the orange Oscar. I would like to find the outtake footage of actor that does Big Bird, who in full costume told an unrully little school kid during taping, seat down, you little B*st**d. Scared the kid and got Big Bird in trouble. It's no worse then the bloopers they released on the Electric Company Dvds, Bill Cosby has a potty mouth.

I loved watching this show growing up,Oscar the Grouch,The Cookie Monster and Grover were my favourite characters on the street,The Count was alot of fun too.
