    1980 Kenner Stretch Armstrong Catalog

By 1980, Stretch Armstrong's popularity had begun to decline, his roster of characters had dwindled down to two

Gone were favorites such as Stretch Monster and Stretch Octopus, it was now just Stretch and his alien enemy X-Ray.

$10.97 seems pretty steep for a toy like this in 1980!?

One of my more destructive cousins had one of these....tied one end to a railing, and the other to his bike. Started peddling like a madman, but couldnt go fast enough to rip poor old stretch apart. However, Stretches one arm and leg (the ones used to secure him) never did stretch all the way back....at least not when I was there.

i really need one of these in my collection. soooo cool!!
i think i have held off because of reading that if you don't exercise them, they will stiffen up or start to have leaking problems. is that true? can anyone confirm that?

I miss my Stretch. Man he was a deadly weapon if you lived in a cool climate where he could get really stiff! I remember mine started to leak and it was like superglue if it dried. You weren't ever going to get that stuff off. I also recall he started getting 'stretch marks' LOL , seriously. The rubber started to deteriorate a bit after a few years. I can't imagine many of these survived in decent shape unless they were NRFB.
I have a pic of my Stretch somewhere. I used to sleep with him. Kinda hurt when you'd roll over and hit your head on him, haha.
It used to take a long time to warm him up and get him into full stretching mode, kind of like kneading dough.

It's a good idea to knead them a bit from time to time, but small holes/tears letting air in is what makes them harden up. If you do get a hard one I wouldn't suggest trying to drain/refill it, much more work than it sounds like and I've wrecked a couple trying to fix them. Better off just leaving them the way they are. I've noticed the prices have dropped dramtically lately on some of these, so might be a good time to pick one up if your interested.

You know, as much as I hate repro stuff. I think this would be one toy I wouldn't mind picking up as a brand new item. At least that way I could actually play with him and not worry about damaging him. I'm talking about a full re-issue, like with classic box art and the exact same original Stretch with the blue undies/shorts and the same head, etc; not some modern representation or one of those ones from the 90's.
