When I grow up I want to be....

Although before my time, I kind of dig these early seventies play suits which I'm sure doubled as Halloween costumes. I love how boys can be Batman, Superman and the Lone Ranger but the girl's choices are more grounded in reality.

Dig the ears on the bat suit, looks like the 40's movie serial version.

This flash forward to 1978 shows that girls can be superheroes too. Nobody in the 70s seems to have gotten even a semi accurate Batman costume. They always seem to have to oversell the name, like without it you'd think it was an insurance salesmen costume.

Proof this site is bad for me department: I've never had any ambitions to collect vintage Halloween Costumes but this Sunday found me at a toyshow with $20 in my pocket and the neat-o graphics on this Ben Cooper Frankenstein outfit were overpowering. Is it just me or this another example of swiping from the Aurora artwork?

      lol!!

I can just see old Brucey sitting in the study, right after hanging up on the upteenth telemarketer trying to sell him car insurance.

"Criminals are a cowardly superstitous lot.....I need a costume...one that instills fear....I must become dark...terrible...like a ......what the?
(gets up to shoo away a bat at the window)
"Damn bats, keep flying into the window at night and scaring the bejeebus out of me."
      "Now...where was I...oh yes!"
"....I must become something dark....terrible....like an INSURANCE salesman."

      The next night:

Alfred: "Excellent costume choice sir..a Bat...that should instill fear in your prey"

Bruce: "Bat? ....I'm not a bat....I'm that most nefarious of all creatures of the dark. I, Alfred...am Insurance Adjuster Man!"
"If I wanted to be a bat I would've wrote fricking BATMAN in huge yellow letters all over this costume! do YOU SEE any letters Alfred?"

      Alfred: "No Master Bruce."
"....Have you considered other options sir...a lawyer perhaps? Tax man? Jehovas Witness....those always scare me?"

Bruce: "Dont be silly Alfred, now bring around the UNDERWRITERMOBILE...I have criminals to strike fear into!"
      "Crayons taste like purple!"

I guess that little kid in the front row on one knee in the green fatigues wants to grow up to be Fidel Castro?

I still have my Batman playsuit like that, and yes, it was my Halloween suit that year.

Hardygirl, Spidey does indeed wear a utility belt (full of web cartridges, a mini-camera, and his Spidey-signal light) under his shirt, so it's not entirely wrong for Remco to market one.

And Brian, that Ben Cooper box is awesome. At $20 I would have bought it, and I don't collect any monster stuff really! Definitely swiped from the 70s Aurora glow kit boxes. Frankenstein Monster's head even looks like the comic ads for the kits as well.

Don't blame you for picking up that Ben Cooper costume, I would've grabbed it too!

Well Brian, you might as well start looking for the rest of the costumes in that set at least. I'm guessing Dean is a little too big to wear it this year.

I think my Mom has a picture of me as a skeleton when I was little. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I just noticed Frankie's got a monster unibrow. No wonder everyone ran in fear from him.

I had that Lone Ranger suit when I was 4-5 . . . man, I loved playing in that and yes, it did double as a halloween costume at least once, maybe twice.

I had that Batman playsuit as a kid. Got it for Christmas in 73 or 74. I still have parts of it. Hey I wore it till it came apart.

I remember one time I wore it riding on the back of my Dad's motorcycle. That plastic mask was pulled tight against my face with the wind drag. It was too cool! My Dad pulled over to check the bike and he asked me why I didn't wear the cape too. I told him I was afraid it would have come loose and I would've lost it. He told me that he would've stopped and picked it up for me. Pretty cool guy.

I thought for a moment the Highway Trooper in the second picture was some kind of Nazi officer?!?!? I thought- who the heck is dressing their kids up like someone from the third reich?!?

I also gid the super loafers Bats and Supes are wearing in the second picture. Is Peter Parker under both of those costumes?
