Anyone else ever have a "U-Drive It"

    This brings back memories.
I wanted one so bad, and when I finally got one for Christmas -- then I found out how lousy it really was.

    Damn those appealing TV commercials

    Here's an auction for one

70's U DRIVE IT table top action set car racing schaper - eBay (item 300264313694 end time Oct-10-08 1501 PDT)

Man this brought back some memories. I had the U fly it. It was basically a plane on a saggy clothesline. A knot in the fish line would catch the plane and pull it up to a strategically placed pulley suspended at a high elevation. We fastened it to a chair at the top of the stairs and extended the line with heavy fish line. When the plane reached the top it slid down the other side and "landed" on the highly graphic cardboard runway. Then you waited for the knot to catch up to the plane and "fly" back to the top. It was minutes of excitement. We figured why not try longer lines. We fastened it to the third floor porch railing of my friends house and tried to fly like 250 feet. The base kept sliding away from the weight of the line so we decided to nail it to a board and stand on it. This was in the pre drilling a hole stage and completely destroyed the red cockpit base driving huge nails through it. It did work but I guess the additional weight and keeping the motor running constantly to pull the plane all the way up was bad cuz it started to smell (burn actually). The plane came screaming down and hit the base and broke. We kept sending it up until nothing worked and that was the end of the U fly it. Man I wish I had a video of that day. Here's one from ebay but it looks slightly different to the one I remember but same concept.

YES!!! I'd forgotten all about this toy until now!! I went through a couple of these actually as a kid! I remember it being IMPOSSIBLE to stay on the roads and needless to say many homes, businesses, and pedestrians were destoyed every time "I drove it". LOL!

      PS-Lemme' guess, this was a 1976 box...the kid's sneakers scream Bicentennial!

I have the commercial om video, but no, I didn't have it. I did have a Drive Yourself Crazy by Tomy. Basically the same idea, but in miniature.
