1978 Child Guidance Sesame Street Catalog

Wrapping up Sesame Street week the only way I know how, with another catalog.

Child Guidance was one of the bigger producers of Sesame Street Merchandising in the 1970's, at this point they were a division of Gabriel (makers of the cool Lone Ranger line of toys) but eventually would become part of the Azrak Hamway Family of companies.

While the company made a variety of cool items based on the coolest fictional street in history but the thing we most remember is their puppets both full size and finger.

Check out a completely Elmo free universe with the 1978 Child Guidance Catalog.

Are these the same guys that made the puppets with the hard heads (not the felt pictured above)? I had Ernie and Bert with hard heads, The Count (as pictured above), Cookie Monster and Oscar (with the pull staring to make the arms flap), and a full-body Big Bird with plastic, poseable legs.

I think I had the large stuffed Big Bird. I had the Cookie Monster puppet as well. I used to cram cookies down his throat and crumbs would fall down my arm all over the floor.

The Bert and Ernie puppets I had were made of hard rubber/plastic. They had cloth shirts and fuzzy hair, but that's all the soft goods they had on them. Any clues on those?

The rubber head puppets were first made by Topper in 71/72 and then by Questor 73-76. The the CG name went to Gabriel and they made these puppets. The Herry hand puppet is very rare. This catalog debuts the first new finger puppets in a while---Count and Herry Monster. I also really like the miniature sets--Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding hood. Very unique.

Those soft head puppets are a little tough to come by anymore. There was a great Harry w/box a little while ago on ebay. Haven't seen an Anything Person puppet in forever. It is interesting to note that Rosevelt Franklin still has a plastic head, tho Bert and Ernie are soft. Also, E&B have the same body textiles, just felt hands and heads. Fantastic catalog plaid; THANKS!!

I'd be willing to bet they never actually produced Roosevelt or the Anything.

Check out the hair on the Count. Almost looks like he's sporting an Afro.

I wonder if they switched to cloth on these puppets due to kids braining themselves with the hard plastic ones? Those suckers were HEAVY. I remember having a hard time playing with them they were so hefty to my puny little kid arms. If one kid hit another with them, you'd have a concussion on your hands.

I was just about to say how cool it was that they made a Roosevelt Franklin puppet. Well, then I take it back before I say it.

They made them earlier--I have a rubber headed Roosevelt---but I doubt they actually produced these. But I don't know for sure, just a hunch.

                        Hiya Scott,

Are you referring to Child Guidance making RF? As to the soft headed muppets, they were out there. Just saw a Bert go by on ebay a little bit ago and forgot to get in on the auction. It was cheeeep too. Rats.
