True Story, my mother bought me this rain coat, although it was blue. I was eight and the one time I wore it home I kept thinking "My mom is having problems with me getting older". I'm lucky none of my buddies who were busy with grown up things such as KISS records saw me.
This 1973 ad touting Sesame Street as a license to toy makers really amuses me. Ernie used to be cool but now he's just some sort of corporate shill, "If you'll just look at these Projections Bert...."

I find that very interesting. All modern Sesame Street merchandise has the same little note on the back with a picture of Elmo (of coure) saying (I'm paraphrasing here) "Sesame Workshop is a non-profit-blah-blah-blah, all money made goes back into Sesame Street".
Oh, and no offense pal, but yeah, you would have gotten maimed around here wearing any Sesame Street gear at 8 years old.
Seeing Ernie like this makes me think the when the director yelled "cut," Ernie and Bert would drop into their real voices, complain about their trailers and do a few lines before making a personal appearance at the Paramus Kiddie City.

I think it's funny when folks my age complain about characters like Elmo being marketing gimmicks. Even when I was a kid, Sesame Street was one of the most marketed ideas ever.
Not sure what the connotations of that are, but it seems important to me....
>"Electric Company playthings"? I don't remember any.
I remember the magazine, which I looved 'cos it had a lot of weird art with strange monsters in it. As a matter offact, there was a maze on the back cover of one, featuring a haunted house, which I tried making in Mego scale whewn I was a kid. A while back someone had a set of mags on ebay, and not only did he tell me what issue the pic was from; he scanned me a high res copy! (So I may be able to finally rectify another of my childhood failures!)

That goes for any popular franchise. If something is annoying-- that's always
a good putdown to resort to.
The truth is EVERYTHING in media is marketing.
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
Ernie's looking a bit tweaked in that pic. I think the combo of wall street bucks and fast living was starting to show at that point....
And I still liked Sesame Street when I was 8 (though I was more of a Muppet Show kind of guy by that point). But there's no way in hell I woulda wore that raincoat LOL
