    Red Torso Superman

Were these figures actually produced by Mego?
If so when, and are they worth any more than a regular T2 superman?

I know about the red Torso Spiderman, but have not heard about the red Torso Superman.

Or was it the case that towards the end of the production of these figures they just used whatever parts that come to hand, hence the red Torso.

Hmmm - I have never seen one of those. Mego probably did use whatever was around at the end though - maybe!!

Unless you're looking at an authentically SEALED MOC specimen, I think you're safe to assume you are looking at a kitbashed figure.

Here are some pictures of the one that I saw for sale on E-Bay. If you look at the head, it does look different to all the regular Superman heads, and if you look at a close up at the back of the neck, there does not appear to be any writing on it. Yet it does not look like either a Don, Clark Kent head, or a DM one. The seller said that he picked it up at a toy auction. He found it at the bottom of a box of He-Man figures that he bought.

Benjamin has said above that it is safe to assume that it is a kitbashed figure. If this is a kitbashed figure, why go to the trouble of also replacing the original arms which must have had red hands (assuming that it was originally a Spiderman figure).

I also attach a link where someone else came across a red torso superman. There is also some discussion as to it's origins.

            Any other views on this?

If you don't mind can you take a picture of the head next to a regular Type 2 Superman head.

Even though more than likely a "kitbashed" figure, I did buy it. I liked the unusual variation, the possibility that it could be a genuine "freak variation", as suggested in the article (see link above) that I posted and also the fact that he was going for a snip!

I will investigate further when it arrives, as the head does look strange and appears to have no writing on the neck. Will also post the picture that you requested, although there are some very good close up pictures of the various head variations on the MM Gallery, so you could always do a comparison yourself, using the pictures already posted.

Curious to know about that head? never seen that. It looks to me that the red torso is just extra spare parts
probably Torch, I think they figured kids would just buy and play and not notice or care, maybe they would think
                  he had a bad sunburn?

Been thinking about this, and if you look at the second picture above it makes perfect sense for the figure to be manufactured with a red Torso, as it blends in nicely with the gap at the front of the cape, around his neck. Just like it does on Spiderman, with the red Torso, where the costume sits low, around his neck. Just a thought.

Having said that, the article above did mention that a carded Aquaman has been known to have a red Torso, which seems to suggest that it was just a case of putting the figure together with what ever parts were to hand, especially near the end of the production of Mego figures.

Perhaps we will never know.Either way I still think he looks cool with the sunburnt chest!

As for the head, have looked at all the pictures on the Galary, and it does not look like any of them. From the pictures there does not appear to be any writing on it, which would make it fall either in the Don, or Clark Kent camp, yet it does not look like either! Very strange.

Will take a detailed look when it arrives. What checks if any should I carry out to determine whether a genuine Mego?

Either way an interesting little mystery.
