    Why Mr. Mxyzptlk?

I've always wondered why Mego made an action figure of Mr. Mxyzptlk. Of all the Superman villains he was possibly the lamest and least used. I can handle Mego passing on Lex Luthor because he was a guy that pretty much wore prison garb so he wouldn't be eye appealing. But Mr. Mxyzptlk? Not Brainiac? Or Bizarro? Perhaps the Mego brass were fans of the Filmation Superman cartoon series where Mxyzptlk seemed to pop up frequently.

My real question is: why did Mego use the fat body for Mr. Mxyzptlk? He was never a fat character. He was a skinny imp.

Never really thought of that. I suppose a Teen Titan body would've been more appropriate for Mxy.

I never liked him either. I got a good deal on a clean loose one, and the head sculpt and outfit are fairly decent, but agreed on the teen titan body. I would much rather have seen Lex or Bizarro, or Manta. I never had a friend show up with Mxy to play and we were all like "Oh cool, you got Mxy!!!, I'm so jealous!"
"Steel-like jaws clacked away, each bite slashing flesh from my body - I used my knife and my hands, and when they were gone, my bloody stumps - and yet the turtles came."

Good point ,you don't see him being made now in the newer lines of supes' villians.Maybe because he always got air time on The Super Friends cartoon he was figure worthy.

Yep, a Titans body would have been perfect. Brown Bear, didn't you customize one for Mxy? How did it turn out?

Didn't the Teen Titans body come out after Mxy was released? Besides since he's suppose to be so small,I think a Little Rascals body might work better.

I read someplace that mego seen lot's of Mr. Mxy in comics and that was why they used him. When they were developing WGSH Mxy was getting alot of comic time. Same thing Catwoman has the pirate outfit that really wasn't in comics long but was around when mego was developing the line.

I didn't know that mxy appeared in the filmation superman. I'm gonna have to watch that now.

OK ... now here's a good story about how loved Mxyzptlk is

Christmas Day 1982. A young RussG had just turned 6 the month before, and was a huge Batman fan. Santa has brought him a big huge gift, biggest gift ever! RussG opens it to find a super awesome Wayne Foundation playset ... RussG only had a naked Spiderman and a Superman with a Shazam outfit from the Mego line. Low a behold there's a box inside with a figure ... OH who could it be ... Batman ??? Robin ??? Joker ??? Nope it was Mxyzptlk. Oh poor little RussG cried and cried, and Mxyzptlk just sat there mocking him with that stupid smile of his ... to this day I still have not added a Mxy to my collection

Yep, Mxy appeared in a few of those Filmation Superman episodes. But I really don't recall him being in many, if any, Superman comics in the 70s to make an impact on Mego.

I've read on this forum that the reason Mego didn't create a Lex Luthor was because Luthor was just a guy in a grey prison jumpsuit or labcoat. However, there was plenty of time to make the purple/green Luthor during Mego's time as Lex started donning that costume in Superman #282 (December 1974), the same year as Mxy's release.

Yes. And that would have worked too.

Great, yet sad story. At least you got a Wayne Foundation.

I got my Mxy on an Easter Sunday. I don't recall if it was 1974 or '75. We had Easter morning at our house on Long Island but in a move so unlike my father we did the "grandparents tour". First we went to my maternal grandparents in Richmond Hill, NY. When we arrived I discovered that the Easter Bunny had left me a basket full of candy and the Joker and the Penguin! Later we went to my paternal grandmother's house in Maspeth for Easter dinner. And the Easter Bunny had left me another basket full of candy and the Riddler and Mr. Mxyptlk! I scored all 4 Super Foes in one day!

And since returning to Mego collecting, I don't plan on getting a Mxy unless one just falls into my hands.
