Action Jackson/POTA astronaut?

I was just looking at the art on the AJ box in another thread (Hardygirl uses it for her avatar as well) and noticed that the artwork is a dead ringer for the head sculpt used on the POTA Astronaut figure. I know it has been postulated that the Astronaut head was meant to be Don from the Dinah Mite line, but I'm wondering if it was originally designed as a replacement for the cruder/uglier original AJ head sculpt....but by the time it was ready to go, AJ was given his pink slip. When the Apes line came up, somebody dusted off the molds and the rest is history.

What do you folks think?

It also occured to me recently that AJ's head was possibly designed and made by the people in Hong Kong. Marty Abrams may have been the model for some of the box art, but the AJ on the box and the AJ in the box don't really look alike.

Ya know, like someone from the orient's interpretation of how an American AJ should look....I could be totally wrong, too.

Hey....here's what I think. AJ is a sculpt of Steve McQueen! I made a mold of AJ's head and without any paint, he's a dead ringer for McQueen.

I know most think he's crude and ugly but there is a lot of detail on him!

Is it Steve McQueen???? Comments?

That's.... really weird; but yeah, I can kinda see it with the beardless one. It wouldn't be too hard to doctor one up for a custom.

I noticed that too, most notable the beardless AJ. The hair's a bit wonky, but the face isn't so bad. I think the pale plastic and dark guyliner make it look worse than it really is.

When I was about 8 or 9, my beardless Action Jackson was in the back seat of the station wagon dressed in his black spy outfit. My Mom gave a little girl in our neighborhood a ride home....she picked up AJ with a puzzled look on her face and said...."....ewww, he's ugly!" I didn't take it too hard!...little ingrate!! I just thought that was an interesting observation.

The paint job and red lips are partly to blame. Without any paint, that sculpt is anything but crude.....(well, in my opinion....lots of forehead wrinkles, facial lines, eye detail, etc....)

I though AJ was designed to be Joe Namath? Then Joe N was hurt while Mego was in production leading to WGSH
