There was a variation I believe in the size and thickness of the inner arms and legs where the elastics go, but no metal joints. I believe it did use elastic strings instead of the bulkier rubber bands. The advantage was that the metal hooks that usually pop out and scratch up he armpits weren't used. I'll look in the Holcomb book to make sure later.

yea, theres a type 1 or early version hulk. theres a difference in the mold of the arm where the metal hook catch. its thicker and the hooks are bigger. also it appears that these early versions are a different color, lighter green and dont fall prey to the color shift that many later hulks do. all i have seen have the gray string on the pants waist. as far as i know there is no other variation of hulk.
That's what I was thinking about except I didn't think it had hooks. Maybe the one I saw had been restrung but the guy that had it was really pushing the fact that it didn't have hooks that usually scratch up the arm pits.
@josephcardone You'll be doing a classic Wookie move (except it won't be droids arms you'll be yanking out of their sockets). They pop up on eBay from time to time. That's where I saw the one I was talking about. I've got a Hulk with a grey rope belt but I'm pretty sure it's greyed from Hulk's incontinence issues... Looking for grey rope belts would be easier than doing the Wookie move, but it wouldn't be as much fun. "Hulk say don't pull finger. Pull armpit!"
