It seems that type 1 Aquamans are considered quite rare and prices reflect that on the market. But weren't they produced from 1972-1975, roughly three years? I guess my question is more about why they are priced so high when i see them out there for sale. Were they short packed?

I have actually seen many T1 AM's over the years, but perhaps they are becoming more rare these days.
As for your question, I do believe Arthur was short packed. He wasn't as popular as Batman or Superman. I think the exact count may be mentioned somewhere he on the Museum if you search around.WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better. -
From Aquaman gallery page here at the Museum-
This addresses the solid boxes only, but I imagine it continued with window boxes-
"Solid Boxed Aquaman was the first on the scene and was the short pack figure (Only 2 per case!)"
I assume this continued because it seems to have continued even further with cards-
"To a Mego collector, Aquaman is a bit of a nightmare to find on a card. Due to his short pack nature, Aquaman cards almost always mean hard to find"WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.Comment
