I think Scott's either exactly right or darn close to it. I was raised saying it with a soft G, which is close to the K in key.

It is pronounced KREZZ - GY with a soft 'S' (i.e. a 'Z' sound) and a hard 'G'. It is the last name of the store's founder, Stanley S. (CORRECTION: Sebastian Spering) Kresge or S.S. Kresge, whose name is represented by the original logo: two stacked S's next to a large K. Of course, his surname name went on to represent the 'K' in Kmart.

As a kid, I remember them saying "Thank you for shopping KREZZ-GEE's" over the speaker. the "G" is a hard g, as in GOAT.

Cress-Key is how I always say it, but hey, I still say May-Go too.
