Grandpa Walton Long Torso?

From What I've read in the Museum, Grandpa Walton has a different, longer fat body torso. What I don't get is why he has a different body. It doesn't make sense to me for Mego to come up with a new mold for such an obscure character.

Any ideas, facts, or theories?

My only guess is that Will Geer was a large man and they wanted the figure to reflect that compared to the other figures.

My guess is that the shorter fat torso was for the type 1 mego body. When Mego switched over to the type 2 style (more muscular looking with more flexable movement) the fat torso needed to be longer to accommodate the hardware used for this new design. Because of the timing of this line's release, type 2 was the norm. I'm not sure, but I don't think the 'Waltons' were ever released with the original type 1 body.
As I said, just a guess.
