    ? about Mego repros

I haven't picked up any Megos yet but I was considering getting a Batman since he was my fave as a child. My question involves the repro pieces. Are they frowned upon in the community? I'm a vintage Star Wars collector and any talk about repros causes massive waves of anger. Personally, as long as the repros look good I usually don't have a problem with them. What's the general consensus on repro accessories for Megos?

As long as you dont try to claim there originals as you go to sell them not to many people have a problem with it. Dr.Mego and CTVT are both good sources for reproductions that look fine.

I don't think anyone here has any problems with the repro pieces- except maybe some complaints about using better bodies- I think several people have replaced their retro action hero bodies with upgraded ones.

        Welcome to the musesum W,

I think one of the reasons the SW community has such a problem with repros is that from the beginning, people were passing them off as original vintage stuff in order to increase the value of their sales. If memory serves, it took a bit of a learning curve before folks began to catch on that there were reproduction items showing up on loose figures.

There are folks in the Mego community that wish there were no repros as it does make identifying a figure a little more complex. But for the most part, as long as an item is disclosed as reproduction during any sale or trade transaction, most folks around here are OK with that. There is even an awesome section in the galleries dedicated to the differences between original and reproduction pieces. It is called 'accessory check' and if you have not seen it, you should take a look.

I understand the issues of someone trying to pass them off as authentic but the overall hatred is brutal on the SW forums. It even somehow brainwashed me to replace 98% of all of my repro weapons with authentic ones ; ) I guess in the grand scheme of things I don't care all that much but I do try to keep everything original. I guess I thought when I first got into the toy collecting hobby 16 years ago being able to purchase missing accessories for vintage toys was a cool idea. I was just curious to see how Mego collectors felt about repros. Thanks everyone.

MEGO repro is the way to go but whatever works for you.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.

I would even take it a step further. It were people like Doc Mego who was one of the first to provide repro parts and through whose initiative Mego was being revived after 30+ years with a whole variety of new amazing figures being released. Without them the whole Mego collecting hobby would probably long dead.

If it is yours, and you're not trying to sell it... your opinion is all that matters.

If you sell it, be honest about what's repro and what's not.

it's all personal preference. i prefer original, but on rare and hard to get pieces I have no problem with repro as a place holder until and if I can get an original

Getting an original removable masked robin is a toughie. I think this is one occasion when most have to go repo.

This sums it up perfect. You could let your classic Thor be displayed helmut-less, Or in the meanwhile; You can pop on a repro one and have a Thor worthy of display. That is until you find a vintage helmut.
Another point is when it comes to repro. Doc's (Mego) is as close as you can get for a fraction of buying classic Mego parts!!!

I would rather have a figure with factory made repros that look new and shiny instead of a beaten old looking original parts.

As long as you don't try to sell these as originals you are fine. Not to mention that people around here have the finest eyes for catching these sort of things...

Plus there is the added bonus that you can play with a repro figure !
I'm affraid to touch some of my real stuff.
