Sears Mail Away Boxes vs Packages

What would be considered more valuable in anyones opinion (I'm sure it would be based on the mego toy)

A Sears mail away figure with original brown box or the packaged megos bought in the store?

    All opinions would be helpful!

    Thanks,

Not sure on the value of mailers, but i would always prefer to buy an original package over its Brown mailer counter part. Mailers are certainly an acquired taste.

I think it's a matter of what you like to collect as far as value. Brown mailer versions of some figures may be more scarce but not very nice to display. Carded and boxed figures look great and you can enjoy seeing the figures and packaging at the same time.

I think just about everyone would PREFER regular printed boxes over the brown mailer boxes, thereby making them much more valuable. However, I really like the mailer boxed figures just for the history of them. I have 6 of the mailer boxed POTA figures, as well as a brown bagged figure, and they are some of the favorites in my collection. Now, if my house was on fire and I only had time to grab one set, I would definitely grab the printed box figures. But I really like me some mailer boxes!

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I definitely prefer boxed and packages over the sears mail away boxes, but something about having a mailer box is really awesome! Can't imagine alot of the mailer boxes survived after getting the figure in the mail.

I view mailers as another avenue of collecting and tend to gravitate towards them if the line is somewhat finite.

A good example are the Remco monsters, I have a carded and loose set of the figures but I like collecting them so I am always looking for a mailer box.

do you find that mailer boxes are more difficult to find than normal packaging

You certainly see more regular boxed figures on ebay. Mailer boxed figures pop up seldom. Like someone already mentioned, you would think kids tossed the plain brown mailer boxes out as soon as they got the figures from them as opposed to colorful boxes that might have been kept to store the figure in. As far as POTA figures go, regular boxes are insanely hard to find as much as mailer boxes are.

I feel like the mailer boxes are an intersting part of the company's history (and toy history from our childhood in general). Regular boxes are first and foremost, the way we remember the toys and how they looked in in the store, but mailers add another level to relive some of the ways we got our toys. I hold mailers in a similar (but not exact) place as my Mego employee handbook, retail catalogs, business cards, etc.

It depends on the figure. For the most part, it is easier to find normal packaging. However, the Wizard from The Wizard of Oz is easier to find as a mailer box than the printed box version.

I think the main difference is that when the regular boxed figures or carded figures hit ebay, there are a LOT of people who want them for the package. When the mailer box figures hit ebay, you're more likely to see bidders who want the figure than the box. As a result, the common figures or figures who are easy to complete will probably go for a lot less than the more difficult to complete figures. A carded Aquaman would probably fetch a lot more than a mailer box Aquaman because the loose figure isn't all that rare, but the card itself isn't so easy to come by.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.
