    opaque Bat belt vs translucent

    Question for the pros:
How translucent is an original Bat belt?
I mean, can you see through it?
From behind I can see the "points" through the belt, but from the front and against a dark surface, I can't see through it.
The pics in the galleries don't offer much help.
I can post a pic later tonite if necessary.

Hi. I currently own six Mego RC Batman figures. Two from my childhood in the 70's and the other four pieced together through the years and in various forms of completion. The best way to look at the "translucent" belt is to take note of how different the latter bright yellow belts are. There is a distinct difference which does not require the kind of examination you are giving this. The term "translucent" used amongst collectors is really defined loosely here to make that distinction. And remember there were molded-cowl Batman figures which had this belt as well. From your description, it sounds like you got yourself a perfect specimen of the translucent belt.

sounds like a gooder to me.

The opaque belts are really poppin' yellow, and many of them are a little bit longer than the earlier belts. Mego lengthened the belt for the fistfighters, but put the longer ones on the regular figures as well.

There are many variations. That is like asking how long is a piece of string.

          By definition:

Opaque - does not allow light to pass through it.

Translucent - allows light to pass through it.

The translucent belt looks thinner, cheaper made if you will than the opaque belt. To me, it looks like they didn't use enough plastic. That's how I distinguish between the two.

The opaque belt is brighter, more "yellow" - thicker looking. You know when you've got an opaque belt, because the colors just "pop" on you.

The tips do not matter one bit. You look at the belt itself. The accessory galleries give you a GREAT idea of what the two look like:

and I agree with MIB...from what you are describing, you have a translucent belt.

looks pretty transparent to me. It fits tight, so it is definitely a pre fist fighter belt. If it were opaque, that yellow would look YELLOW.

definitely translucent. No doubt about it. None.

I believe I can even see where the black and the grey of the suit meet through it.

I agree as well. Nice example of a translucent belt. Nice score!

The brighter yellow of the later belts may be less about how much plastic was
used as it is about what PMS color is selected to color the pellets.

Some shades of yellow are more muted. When I first had yellow belts made
in China, they were a duller yellow and somewhat translucent. I later did a
run but went with a brighter PMS and the effect is more opaque.

Thanks, Doc---great info. And of course your belts are clearly marked.

C., I think you have an original translucent belt there. The late-issue belts, as noted above, are the longer Fist-Fighting version and a vivid lemon-yellow.

Additionally, molds were reused & Mego was a comparatively inexpensive manufacturer--there will be considerable manufacturing variation as to flashing, clasps, and point quality on vintage Batman belts, as well as to color.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.
