    Mego Type 1 body question

I have a type one Mego body (the type with rivets) and I was wondering: will the wrist pop out of the forearm with a pull? It looks like it should, but after some gently tugging I'm afraid to break it. Maybe I need to soak the arm in hot water first. The reason I want to do this is out of convenience. The type 1 body I have is missing a hand, but I have a spare arm where if I can take the hand off I could easily put the hand onto the arm attached to the body. Otherwise I'll need to do an arm switch and re-string, which seems like more work.

I'd do the arm switch and re-string. The hands break too easy.

with the type ones ... I have to say lonnie has the best idea. I know I've messed up too many hands trying to do just a hand switch.

I did a T1 hand switch the other day and was successful. I was scared of breaking the hand getting it off the donor arm as well. I didn't want to replace the whole arm and restring because this was my figure from childhood and i wanted to maintain as much of the originality as i could. I heated up some water in the microwave for 60 seconds and soaked the donor arm for several seconds. The first attempt at removing the hand wasn't successful because i was afraid of breaking it... but i did notice it trying to come out of the socket. I soaked it for a bit longer and then gave it another go. This time applying gentle, steady pulling pressure while twisting the wrist pin back and forth. Took a couple seconds.... then POP, there it was.

Restringing T1's isn't really that hard though.... check out the tutorial here at the museum. Get you some elastic at Walmart for a buck or two. Takes less than 5 minutes to do probably. But, then you have to be careful removing the head. I've had neck plugs try and tear on me popping the heads off. So for me.... i say it's a toss up as to which method you choose. Good luck.

Thanks for the input! I shall try boiling some water and swap out the hand when I get home from work.

Boiled water works. Microwaved like how FMB stated.

Just make sure when you pull the hand out, hold from below the rivet and pull gently, not just a hard yank. Use a hand towel to hold both parts, the hand and forearm.

It does work. Managed to remove a plethora of these beauties for mod.

I can restring a T1 body using the original string in just a couple of minutes without any damage, but I've broken several hands over the years trying the heat-n-swap method. If you do decide to re-string and need help, you can check out my tutorial here:

Wade, really dig that tutorial. Used it the first time I restrung a T1.
Now I use shock cord to tie and and works perfect. Not too tie but enough to move and not be loose.
                Thanks so much, Wade.

Thanks for the hot water tip. I am just getting into customizing & don't have the string currently to restring. I read this, boiled the water and voila....Davey Crockett is healed! Thanks!
