    AJ Mustang Color Question

Bryan and I were talking about the AJ Mustang color schemes recently and we know Black is more common then Dark Brown but where does the Light Brown Mustang fall into this equation? And was that Light Brown version originally produced for AJ or POTA?

Depends on what you are referring to. There is only one "brown AJ mustang". In the picture below, the 3 horses on the left are the 3 colors of AJ mustang, the first on the left being the brown AJ mustang. What I think you may be referring to is Shadow from the American West line which is 2nd from the right, and is not an AJ mustang.

If thats what you are asking, I'd say they are pretty close in rarity, with the brown AJ mustang being slightly more common.

Overall there are 3 "brown" horses. The third being the POTA stallion on the far right.

In my experience there has been some instances of Mego packing some of the horses in boxes from the other lines, probably to get rid of excess stock of some. But as far as what is "proper", the 3 horses on the left would be the AJ Mustangs (All 3 bearing the AJ logo brand on the hindquarters), The yellow being Dinah Mite, the Reddish Brown horse being American West and the Dark brown being the Apes Stallion. None of these last 3 have the AJ logo brand.

*** It's too bad Mego didn't use the saddle design as seen on the grey A/J Mustang & Golden Pal for the Action Stallion... While it's not purely "Apes style" it's a lot closer to what they had under those fur pads than the Western design saddle they stuck him with... **

        Thank you sir......

Another example why the Museum can't be touched, the vast knowledge of its members and their willingness to share it is priceless!

Great group shot of all of all the Mustang variations.

Love me some ponies. I just gotta find that grey one. Someday...

This is one of my favorite pictures. And it was great seeing them all on display at a past MegoMeet.

One other question, are the AJ Mustangs the only one to carry a hindquarter brand?

I prefer that style of saddle as well. A note about that saddle style, up until recently it was only ever found on the Golden Pal and the 2 known examples of the gray mustang. And even those 2 have some actual differences between them. However, 1 example of the black & white AJ mustang has been located with that style saddle, and its currently the only known example.

Yes, they are. All 3 of them have it, none of the others have any brand. Additionally, it should be noted that both the black & brown AJ mustangs have the AJ logo molded on the sides of the saddle as well. The gray mustang does not as it is a different saddle. The logo was removed and does not appear on the saddles of the Apes Stallion or Shadow.
