    magazine article of the 70's

I have been looking for a magazine article that was published in the late 70's in something like Better Homes and Gardens, or Good House Keeping that had a really cool pictorial on making dioramas or playsets for your Super Hero figures or Star Wars figures. It featured a full gotham city made from cardboard and Hoth playset made out of styrofoam.

Anyone else remember this and or know where I might find it again, I can't for the life of me figure out what the real magazine was.

I don't think I ever saw that, but it sounds awesome! Since The Empire Strikes Back came out in 1980, maybe it probably came out in the early 80s rather than the late 70s. If you're looking for it on google, that might help.

(looks like palitoy and I posted at the same time)

          Hmmmm....

The Hoth and Dagobah plans were in Wonan's Day too.... and they're on line SOMEWHERE but I can't remember where. (There's also a wooden "Outer Space Station" plan set for 3.5" figures.)

Poor kid with the Hoth playset, there is 2 ways to look at this.
Like now looking at it as an adult that's just cool as hell, but being 9 years old in 1980 it would've went like this when his friends showed up to play,

"How come your hoth playset is made out of styrofoam and junk? I got the real one for christmas. Don't you have any ships big enough for your men to fit in instead of those little ones? I gotta big snowspeeder and a taun taun"

This thread prompted me to dig out my original instructions for the Outer-Space Station. I had high hopes that my father would build it for me, but he took one look at it and said, "Star Wars? There's no way I'm wasting my time working on that crap!"

Btw, did you notice that the monorail was made from a 2-liter of soda, and in the Dagobah playset Artoo is chilling in a swamp made from SLIME!

                          Hmmmm....

                          My “Supercity” sense is tingling....

Back in the day, Woman’s Day magazine totally rocked! The Supercity and Outer Space Station plans were mailaways, and I had both as a kid. I’d always wanted to finish the city, but as a kid me an’ my Gran’pa only finished the skyscraper. I DID finish the whole thing a few years back. (Apparently I’m the only person on Earth who did....) I’ve wanted to finish the Space Station too, but I don’t have anywhere to put it. Both sets of plans are available in the Woman’s Day Book of Best Loved Crafts. (I THINK that’s the name.)

Hoth and Dagobah were presented in the magazine, and I did build Hoth as a kid. It was actually pretty nifty. The sets were designed for play more than display, so there’s plenty of neat things to do. The plans for both ARE available online.... but I forget where. I have a set of poor quality, but useful plans I printed off. (10 years ago, so I don’t know for sure that they’re still out there.)

                          Don C.

Don, do you have photos of the sets that you built?

Yep, mine too.. The good part about it, though, was both my best pal Mike and I were already 14 or so by that time, so we simply bought figures and made all our own ships..!!

We could have bought our own x-wings and such, but we were big into creativity, so we just preferred to make our own. They were actually quite exquisite for cardboard.. We used balsa and sturdy cardboard, lots of panels with space scenes on screens, jeffries tubes (yes, we borrowed a few things from Trek..), retractable landing gear, you name it, most extremely accurate to the SW Sketchbook that was out.

Wish we had only taken pictures...
