Mego Motor um... Malopalooza!!

Hey all,

Got some Motor questions... I know Kryptosmaster had started some disassembly on an AJ scramble cycle back in '09, but that thread wasn't "buttoned up" if you will. I'm posting here to avoid necro:

I've got an action stallion missing the top to his remote, but otherwise in pretty good shape. No loose wire connections on either end, but no motor response when battery installed.
I'm presuming it's a faulty wire... if that's not the case though, has anyone sourced replacement hobby motors and what are the specs if so?

The secondary issue (not that it wouldn't be great for AS to haul some POTA wagon action) is that I'm planning on some custom builds - so I will have to fabricate a few custom mod gear assemblies and source a small number of motors.
One project involves three or more leg pairs, so I'm leaving that one for back burner...
The main build project I want to do can pretty much copy the AS gear and box assembly 1 to 1, with just simple push-bar modifications to the front and back of the movement rods... Otherwise how is the Dewback going to wag it's head and tail as it walks? Amirite or amirite?

Anyone done anything close to this before and had to look for parts, etc?

I couldn't find a reasonably priced replacement wire for the cycle remote control. It has to be within a specific diameter range or it binds up inside the sheath and has to be of a tensile quality like piano wire. I could find 3 foot pre-cut sections and 20,000 foot rools. Nothing in between and even the guy at the hardware store couldn't get the wire companies to sell him a shorter spool length or longer precut piece.
I was debating on just cutting down all the parts of the original cord to match what's left of the original wire and going that route.
I did pick up a parts cycle that has intact and working steering controls so I am probably going to try to make one good cycle from the two.
I also found a motor that is nearly an identical (visually) match for the little motors Mego used. They use them inside the actuators that control the a/c doors inside some cars. The motors aren't usually the problem though. Most times you can re-solder a wire and/or grease/oil up all the moving parts and they will start working again but the plastic gears on the cycles are what usually goes bad on those.

Hmmm... Thanks Rich, it looks like I'll be busting the AS down and going over it. The Dewback will be non steering, and I planned on making a new remote design anyway (*a stubby lightsaber handle). I guess all I need to do is teach myself how to reliably fabricate the thing. Gears and such I can mold and recast, with whatever fixes are called for. Seems like a bit of work though.

One of the dollar stores had those over rated flashlight lightsabers a short time ago. May have been from Halloween. Might work for your remote. Has a switch and holds batteries that should power your project.

Can you make metal gears in replace of a plastic gear? Or know of a source to get a gear like that?
Unfortunately the gears used on the motor shaft in those actuators are a worm-drive gear so can't be used.
That's all that seems to be the problem on the cycles. A plastic gear cracks down the side (between gear teeth) and just spins on the shaft. A new metal gear would solve the problem.
