    Mego Romulan Question

    Hi Everyone!!

I am new here but have been collecting Mego since age 7 (1976). I have really been into Star Wars for many years but have recently been trying to put together a Mego Star Trek loose variation set (T1 painted and non painted lips, T2, and Aliens).

I purchased a Romulan from LandL collectables (Laura is awesome and a really big help) and while waiting for him to arrive I saw one on Ebay with a card and bubble that I thought would be awesome to display if I ever wanted to collect them on the card again (I really spent too much money this month!!). I really know the one from LandL is 100% vintage because of who they are. The one from Ebay seems to be 100% Mego as well.

MEGO Romulan – Star Trek Aliens – Comp Vintage 1976 NM - eBay (item 230488254360 end time Jun-15-10 14:57:22 PDT)

My question is that the helmets have different gold plateing. The one from LandL is a light gold and the one from Ebay is like a copper. Both are shiny and neither has been painted. Is this a variation or degredation?

    Very best regards,
    Joe

To me it looks like the gold plating has come off the sides, which means it's probably been handled a lot. My guess is the oil from someone's hand over the years has caused the gold to darken on it and that's why the gold seems darker than the one you got from LandL. But of course that's just a guess on my part.

Thank you! I am not certain about how to post a picture here. I never dreamed of having two of these guys and I really cannot believe I have them to compare. One helmet has a larger circle in the middle. I am about 99.9% certain that they are genuine. The one with the copper (purchased from Ebay) has speckles on the hair of the same color. It is really weird because it is uniform, not like oxidation. The one from LandL is a light gold - kind of like a Kenner C3PO (light gold version). The copper one seems like the seller said - stored away since 1976 - it is brand new. I don't think it was handled much - it even has some clear plastic residue from when it was cast. I don't think it is from the oil from hands, it could be some weird interaction with the plastic???

      Very best regards,
      Joe
