UK POTA Soldier Ape...

[Blue Meanie]

The Soldier Ape was released in the UK with a General top. There is the Blue Top and the Burgundy top. There is also a Black Top. My question is this...which top is rarer...The Burgundy Top or the Black Top? I've had 2 of the Black Top variations...1st one I sold at last years meet...and just got a second one withing the last 4 months. BTW...the black top is not in the POTA Gallery.

I'm aware of the Black top, Berto. It's usually not mentioned very much. The Burgundy top is traditionally considered the most valuable and is quite scarce. I'd wager the Black top is equally scarce, but usually doesn't get the same attention as the Burgundy.

I'm no expert though.

I would like to see some pics. I wasnt aware of the black top. The main one I heard about was the burgundy top. Although never owned one Yet!

I've only ever seen the black and burgandy tops on the UK Apes. I have the two variants on the Soldier Ape and Ursus, there is a pic of the Ursus in the gallery. The black is the most common, the burgandy is really tough to find on card.

The black top is third from the left, although it is not very clear from the pictures.
In hand it is definitely black. The material inside is graphite coloured. I would think
it is more common than the burgundy top, but because it is very difficult to spot
from an Ebay picture a lot probably get overlooked. I'll take a better pic later today and post it up.

I have all three also. The blue cuffed is in the back row, far left. Black tunic is back row far right and you can see the burgundy guy in the center row on the right. I believe I have every variation except the speckled lizard skin tunic. Anyone have one they want to sell?

I think ape-heads want both the cuffed black and the burgundy with a priority on the burgundy.

I like the black over the blue, it is really sharp.

Funny thing is I've had 4 Burgundy Tops in the past...this is only the 2nd Black Top I've ever come across. BTW, what is a Speckled Lizard Top?? Any pics of it here...or can you provide a pic.

Mike J can probably answer that question better than I can, but I have seen a few speckled lizard tunics. One has silver flakes in it to create the "speckled" look and the other has tiny air bubbles in the material. I think the silver flakes are the true speckled version. Both have been depicted here on the museum in the past few months.

A common misconception is that the cuffed soldier ape was only available in UK. I bought mine at Big N in 1976, carded and cuffed.

I'm crazy for the cuffed soldier tunics--I have blue, black, & finally maroon (which I keep on Ursus).

Was the lizard vinyl ever used on cuffed versions? I thought the red & gray tunics only came with mittens.

I never knew Urko came with mittens until I started hanging around here. Mine came cuffed as a kid and I thought all Urkos were like that.

I have never seen a cuffed lizard tunic, nor a silver tunic with cuffs. I guess they could be out there, but I would think they would have surfaced by now.
