    Dr Who Denys Fisher

    Hello.

I recently won an auction for a Tom Baker Denys Fisher head. My wife is a big Dr. Who fan and Tom Baker is her favorite. I got into Dr. Who when the 10th Doctor came about and I've watched it since. Since I bought only the head I am aware this is going to be quite a custom project as I'm not really concerned about having original Denys Fisher parts, clothes, or accessories.

As I have done a little bit of research on the matter, I understand the Tom Baker head is scaled at 9"-10" instead of the 8" Mego scale. Does anyone know of where I might purchase a larger body for that scale? Obviously, I'd rather work with a Castaway or Emce 8" body, but since the scale is off I don't know where to go. I thought about maybe using a Playmates Star Trek body or something, which are 9" scaled. Has anyone on the board here ever taken the head off a Star Trek Playmates doll and was successful in keeping the body? (If this is the route to go I'll need to get a Star Trek Playmates doll as I don't have any at the moment.)

Lastly, according the auction listing the Tom baker head has some discoloration. At this point I don't know if it's zombie-fied or just flesh colored paint rubbed off. I'm thinking of using an airbrush with an acrylic paint primer and spray new flesh/hair color on him. So if anyone has any links to customs as they refer to Denys Fisher, I would be interested--and it's very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jacob

When I was customizing the 9" Logan's Run figures, I'd look for old Maxx FX dolls on ebay, they're the Mego 9" body recycled.

Also the Flash Gordon dolls uses that body as well.

Thanks so much, you've been most helpful! I'll hopefully find a minty Maxx FX fig loose on eBay or here on the MM message board.

Yes, even buying the Maxx FX figures MIB are cheap. I bought one a few years back to replace the common 'cracked ankles' on my Tom Baker ~ It is indeed the same body.

Funny that you mentioned the graying of Tom's head. My first Tom had a slightly grayish head and it's odd to say, but I actually like the way it looked with his clothing. It looked nice next to the minty Denys box I have.

Also, if you need to style Tom up, I used the Playmates Picard long coat and pants from 'First Contact'. It inexpensive to buy and looks more like the later years, without having to do any sewing..:

I love this Doctor!! Looks way better than the original outfit. I've been thinking about making a bunch of customs from the series. A Mego Davros would be so cool.

I must say that does look better, Ive started to peak at the doctor who stuff now, never had them, but do remember the tardis perched on the counter in our local small toyshop.

Not wanting to take any more away from Jacob's thread, but to answer some of the posted msgs, even without my custom shirt and vest, ol' Tom does like the change up..:

I was always going to remove the black collar/cuffs and replace with thin brown corduroy, but haven't gotten to it yet.. The original 'tweed' pants and this coat might look good together, but they really don't, hence adding the tan pants also from the same Picard outfit... Enjoy.
