What's the deal with Captain Action?

And the costumes? did they license all the characters?

Did he assume any of the powers when he was in costume?

As far as I know, all costumes were licensed, just as with Mego.

Ideal didn't really create a backstory for Cap, you just suited him up & he was then Batman, Flash Gordon, etc.

DC did a tie-in comic of several issues, wherein Capt. Action had varying powers based upon channelling ancient coins. Action Boy was his son.

TwoMorrows (which published Ben's WGSH book) has published a nice history of Captain Action.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

DC did a 5 comic series for Captain Action, giving a background story for him.

There was also a comic in the eighties...

and Moonstone is currently publishing a comic (I believe in this one his disguises are merely camouflage in this series).

...and lets not forget the IDEAL mini yellow comic that came with each outfit for Captain Action,..in which, depending the costume he wore,..were the powers he got,...for example,...while being CA, he fell out of the window of his Headquarters at the top of a mountain, and opened his CA parachute,..while coming down, he saw the space aliens flying rockets,..(yes rockets), he changed his costume into Superman, let go of the parachute and could then fly and destroy them! So yes,..Id say he acquired the powers of those costumes he wore.

I love Captain Action! He's my favorite AF. I was 8 when I first got him. It was fantastic to have a 12" cloth outfitted, fully poseable superhero! I could turn him into Superman and put him in the poses I saw Superman in the comic books! The book by Michael Urey is great! I highly recommend it! I can't describe how special CA ( and Action Boy) was to me- to any child in the late 60's to finally have a fully poseable Superman, Batman, etc- whoever you chose to turn CA into! Of course I enjoyed keeping him as Captain Action too and I made up powers for him!
