I'd think the smell would fade away over time but, I'd still probably try the OxiClean on the suit, and a light bath with warm soapy water and a toothbrush for the body and plastic accessories.

The inside of the doll might be rotten. You may want to take him apart clean inside or soak him in oxyclean for a day or so. Not with the costume on.

Figure disassembled,scrubbed,inside looks clean.Put costume in wash machine,looked good,still stink.Soaked the suit in warm water oxy-clean 4 hrs the black dye from his undies started coming out.
After all these tries the odor still persistent.
A test smell leaves the odor in my nose for 2 hrs.

My new suggestion is lighter fluid, a metal pail and a match. Put the figure in the pail, cover with lots of lighter fluid. Back away and throw a match from a couple feet away into the pail and let burn for a few minutes. When you think it's been long enough, add some water and extinguish the fire. Once it cools, dump out water and throw pail and melted batman in the trash for pick-up by garbage company. End of problem...
Or just sell it on ebay as "vintage,odiferous mego batman".

Sounds like a good plan.
Doesnt work for utility bills tho.

Plastic does absorb chemicel smells in to the plastic matrix. the amount of absorbsion is porportion to the time spent in the dark damp area. so 35 years in a dark damp area mean alot of mold residue has been secreted on to the plastic.its going to take time
It will take a long time to disapate the smell.
you can try some sented bleach /water mix (10% Bleach to 90% water)for the plastic or wipe the plastic body with acetone.

for the head is vinyl airing it outside at night for 3 months might work

Update Any one still interested in this?
The suit has lost its smell.Clothesline extra week did the trick.Probably the cold and sunlight.
T1 Body is a lost cause.
Scary to beleive some ones house could produce this disgusting odor.
Unless was found in a sewer?
Who knows with ebay eh?
Will probably take Lonnies advice.

I've heard that you can put a smelly toy in scented cat litter and that will also remove the smell as well.
