They sold urko and ursus on the wrong cards for a while and so there is a little confusion.

The Museum POTA Galleries help clarify the packaging confusion. I think properly:

Ursus has a black face & no helmet.

Urko has a brown face & a molded non-removeable helmet.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I prefer them the other way around because that's the way I got them new as a kid.
Urko is the black faced one and Ursus is the one with the helmet.
I'm pretty sure that's the proper Mego intention when they were first released and then they got reversed later on.
Either way is technically correct since they were both released under the two names.

I always liked the Helmet Urko better. I guess because Urko wore the helmet in the TV show. In Beneath the Planet of the Apes, the general wearing the Helmet was Ursus. So that is where the confusion comes in.

I guess I was deferring to the gallery descriptions as well as the beautiful Palitoy cards.

What was the helmeted general called in Beneath the POTA?

And I always thought the black-faced one should have been Gen. Aldo...

Yeah, the Museum has decided to make a choice and went with Urko as the helmeted one but like I said earlier, to me the one with the helmet will always be Ursus no matter what because that's what was on the package when I got him and I'm pretty sure the Mego literature backs that up but I don't know that for 100% sure.

Yes the Beneath the POTA general was Ursus.
The Black faced Mego does resemble Aldo.
The second series was basically based on the TV show so that's where the confusion lies since there was only one general...Urko... and they released two general figures in that series. _Plus Urko did wear a helmet in the TV show but it was black (and so was Ursus's in the movie so...there goes that theory...lol)

Actually the Mego literature supports the fact that the general with the helmet was URKO first. He was still Urko on the second issue card with the corrected copyright info and then became Ursus on the third issue. The copyright on the Palitoy cards is incorrect and was never changed as they have the four characters from the TV show with a 1967 copyright.
I believe by the time those were released the widow of Arthur Jacobs had sold the rights to 20thcentury so it really didn't matter.

I'll defer to your info since I have none to use. I just thought I remembered all the little catalogs that came packaged with sets and figures referring to them as I described. I must've received mine on a 3rd issue card then because I know he was Ursus (helmeted) when i got him. He was the last ape I got out of all 10 figures. I got him for either my 10th or 11th birthday in 1975 or 1976. And I know the other was marked Urko and I got those for Christmas in either 74 or 75.

For what it's worth, CIPSA had Urko as the helmet figure and Ursus as the non-helmet black head figure.

I see some confusion here, so will attempt to clear up.

Mego made two generals, one with a helmet, one without. Both were released under the names Urko and Ursus. So when you see someone searching for a non-helmet Ursus, they are either making clear which general they are after, or saying they want a non-helmet general on an Ursus card.

So yes, it does exist and is pretty common. Pictures are all over the gallery, but again, you have to look under both names to get all the info.

I saw a picture of Ursus/ Urko, where someone had painted those stupid pink lips, and nose black.I couldn't believe how much better it looked.I wish Mego had went that route.
