What do you think made them change the mask to be painted on? Customer complaint or cost? I wonder if there were a lot of masks that sat around the warehouse after the change or if they used all the ones they had. I wonder because for the picture of the secret identity figures shows Dick holding a Robin mask. That was for Christmas '74. Robin had a painted mask long before then. Do you think it was like "go grab me one of the little black masks out of the giant box of them in the warehouse"?

I think at this stage little kids were losing both the Batman and Robin masks, so the decision was made to make them permanently affixed. I would think it had little to do about cost because they had to make a whole new mold for Batman to address the problem. I'm all for bring the removable mask back (even on Robin). I doubt Mattel will mess with that, although it would make a wonderful Mattycollector exclusive if they wanted to do it on a limited run for the collectors. -
