Star Trek Crew Shirt Emblems

How does one go about protecting these very fragile stickers. I had a thought that I would peel of the foil, then glue it back or otherwise find a way to fasten it back on in a more solid fashion, but with my clumsy hands, this could be a disaster. I read here that the later figures had a white boarder around the emblem to keep it sealed but mine are the older variety.

Any advice on the best way to preserve or fix these on loose figures? How do you guys keep these things in good shape?
