Someone please advise - I've followed the instructions on de-greying heads using Plastidip and have seen zero improvement after four dunks. Is it possible that the head is just too far gone?

It can be to far gone. I have done heads that took 2-3 times and came out great. I had a Mr. Fantastic that I had to do like 5-8 times and did start to come around but I lost the eye paint on him. -
Hmmmm....
I've had a lot of luck with that auto interior vinyl paint. It's tough to mix the right colour; and there's a very limited selection of colours availabe.... but it CAN be done. I used it on a Mego Don head that was grey and hard as a golf ball and it fixed it right up. More or less. The paint actualy absorbs into the plastic and returns a measure of elasticity. Not as much as it originally had, but it was flexible enough to put onto a body.
If you try the vinyl paint, be warned: it dries REALLY fast, and you'll have to use a few coats to smooth it out. (Brush strokes will be READILY visible after the first coat.) AND it's EXTREMELY dangerous. Don't breathe the stuff, avoid skin contact, and use it outdoors.

I think it was mentioned before that color didn't matter. Fist I only found black and was ready to go with it, but then I found the red at homedepot. Just follow the Black magic method and chances are it will work after a few dips, but like I suggested keep an eye on the hair and eye paint after you do the peel off.Comment

Color DOES matter...Red Plasti-Dip and Black Magic Tire Wet. It also helps to do have as dry conditions as possible. I find that de-greying works better this time of the year. Less humidity. The only figure I've had a hard time with is Zombified Torch heads. I've done a James Bond figure as well as Chips, Dukes, and others. Never had a problem. Usually results come after just the first dip. I would dip the heads and let them sit overnight. 24 hours usually does the trick. Just make sure you use enough tire wet spray so that you don't peel off any hair and eye paint. Good Luck."When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity".

Just out of curiousity, is there a guide (museum or elsewhere) that shows this process?
Also along the same vein; is there any guide that shows how to restring/repair figures also?
Not that I couldn't figure out a restring, but tips are always handy when someone else already made the mistakes for you.

You ever wonder who comes up with this stuff?
Why in the world would anyone even dip a head in that plastidip let alone think it would renew a grayed head?
Not to mention figuring out you need to spray it with that tire spray first.
Some things are just bizarre. Never in a million years would I have thought of that.
I might try this with a discolored Burke/Verdon I have and I can redo my tool handles at the same time. LOL

Hiya Stuart,
I have had some luck redying greyed out heads in a pan of red RIT. Basically just returning the flesh tone to the plastic. It works rather fast, tho. You gotta be careful or you will have Cochise instead of Ponch. If you can't get the plastidip to work, you might try some dye.
good luck with it.
