Mego of the Day: Chopper From Starsky and Hutch

Mego of the Day for Tuesday is the generic bad guy to TV's Supercop Duo Starsky and Hutch, an underrated gem of an action figure. If you didn't have him, there would be much for the cops to do. An interesting bit of trivia is that Chopper was sculpted by Ken Sheller and was never meant to have that painted on Hobo beard. Without Chopper takes on a more menacing appearance whcih was orginally intended.... Did you have a Chopper as a kid? Is this the first time you've heard mention of it? Is it on your wantlist? Does it interest you?

I remember someone pointing out, without the beard he looks a little like Charles Bronson.

I wonder if Bronson was the sculptor's subconscious inspiration for Chopper ?

I don't own Chopper, but he always looked like a misguided, time-tossed caveman with bad fashion sense. Still, a perfect THUG.

Chris ~ I'd have stopped with the '..bad fashion sense'.

Geez, this homeboy would have been laughed off the curb by my 'brothers of color'..

Then again, if Plaidstallions is of any merit, I guess the stripes would have been alright. Keeping the beard off would have perhaps been an improvement. Somehow..

That sweater could go a long way towards helping someone with a “Where's Waldo” custom.

I don't have a Chopper, but if I ever get a Starsky & Hutch, I would consider getting one.

I like ole Chopper. Never knew about the beard though. That would certainly change his look. I completed a set of S&H carded then went after a set loose. Found Chopper on a beat up card and freed him. Felt pretty good doing it. I'm sure he was the last figure I took off a card.

I remember seeing a huge display of Chopper, Huggy Bear and Dobey at Bi-Way (a close out store) around 1978. I stared at them for a long time, thinking "No Starsky or Hutch, who'd want these guys?"

I found years later, that i did!

The first time I saw one of these loose at a toy show about 10 years ago, I thought it was a generic AJ figure. But then again, AJ could be one of Chopper's henchmen.

Yeah, Chopper's only slightly uglier than poor AJ.

I had a carded Huggy Bear and sold him on Ebay. It turned out that Antonio Fargas works for her husband so it was a present for him. Small world.

I had Chopper as a kid, don't really remember why though. Mom probably picked him up cheap. Never had the Starsky and Hutch figures. Chopper made a pretty good bad guy for all of the other Mego's.

I would get a chopper. He certainly isn't at the top of my list but would be a good companion piece for S and H. If the price was right.
Perhaps I'll keep my eye out for an AFA graded MOC Chopper. Ha ha.

I never had any desire at all for this figure, but last year I picked up a Starsky and Hutch for a good price, so now I suppose I'll have to complete the line one day, so I guess I'll eventually get ol' Chops. I'm in no hurry though, just look at him.
