    Mego of the Day: Blackbeard

A new feature at the Museum Forums will be Mego of the Day. Where we will randomly pic a character from the Mego Toy universe and feature it.
Our first inductee is the dreaded Edward Teach aka Blackbeard from the World's Greatest Super Pirates.
Did you have it as a kid? See it? Know of it? Is it in your collection now? On your want list? Do we need pictures of it's packaging in the Museum? Have you ever used it in a custom? Have you customized the character? Why wouldn't this make into your collection? Did you make funny caption pictures with it? Post pics, tell stories, say whatever, it's mego of the day.
    Tomorrow's MOTD: Baron Karza

I did not have any of the Mego Pirates as a kid, but am a pirate fan so this guy is definately on my want list. Not sure why the pirates aren't more popular, what kid didn't want to be a pirate at least once in a while? I think it is a decent figure with a fairly unique outfit. This has a level of detail that might have been nice to see on Joker or Penguin as well.

I also saw the pirates at one store, between them the Robin Hoods and the Knights, I felt like I was looking at Mego's past (this was probably 1978) as I had never heard of them. The thing I remember most about them were the grin on Blackbeard and the weird window boxes.

Funny, I have no memory of seeing any of the Pirates in the stores and certainly didn't have them when I was younger. I believe they are one of Megos best lines. I have them now. Although I still need 2 original pirate pistols (anyone?).

I never knew the pirates existed until I joined up here. Never saw them in the stores, or if I did, they made no impression. They're cool looking figures, but there are still so many that I'd like too own, I doubt I will ever get around to these.

Me too, wish I had thought of it. Scott takes credit however.

The Mego Pirates have always been one of my favorite lines, right up there with the Knights, Robin Hood and Western in terms of nice sculpts, great clothing, and killer accessories. And I still have the original Blackbeard hat I had as a kid!

Wow, Joe, you had them as a kid? That's unusual.

The pirates were a big surprise to a lot of us when we first started learning about Megos. John Bonavita's book was a big source of "Wow! I had no idea they made that!" Knights, Robin Hood and Pirates.

They were going for big bucks back in the early days. I got most of my set of pirates at the Humdinger toy show in San Jose. I think I actually traded a Batgirl and some cash with a dealer named Pat who was a regular around here with Megos. I didn't learn until later that my Blackbeard was armed with Fighting Fury pistols and that the box art insert was a color xerox.

He was an especially big deal because he had the Zorro sword--so once you had that sword you were on your way to a Zorro!

I think it's a shame they've fallen in esteem due to the repros. But the various heads are nice for customs.

I never saw them or knew they existed til I joined the museum.

The pirates are definitely on my want list. As of now I only have Captain Patch.

I was wondering if ANYONE had these as a kid. I think I had several knights and Robin Hood figures, but I never even knew this line existed. I think I was re-collecting for a year before I realized these were not Matchbox.

I lived in Illinois as a kid, on the border of Iowa where Illinois, Iowa and Missouri meet. My mother loved to shop, so we'd often drive to St. Louis or Chicago for weekend shopping trips. I was exposed to a lot of Megos, even if I wasn't allowed to buy them all. I remember seeing the Robin Hood line, Knights, and the Pirates all at the same time in a Target in St. Louis. I managed to talk her into buying me all four pirates, but not Robin Hood or the Knights. I later got a couple of the knights, but never owned any of the Robin Hood figures until I was an adult.

I am confident that, somewhere in a Venture in Chicago, there still lies a carded Conan, hidden behind some other toys in anticipation of me coming back later because Mom wouldn't let me buy him that day.

I didn't warm up to these until I was 30 years old, just something didn't click for me but now I love them. It is all because of Kane Show one Sunday morning and getting a good deal on two of them, from this kooky guy who told me he also had them solid boxed. He couldn't provide me with any evidence of this however.

He's still telling stories, at the last Kane he told Charlie he just bought a MIB "Jet Jackson".

If the chain still existed, I'm sure their toy departments would be ransacked by the end of the week after that statement
