yeah, a display case with closing doors should prevent sunlight fading . and thats one of the things about toy collectors i don't understand they spend all this money and don't set up a proper display. it's like they're just hoarding stuff. lol

You might also try your local library or department stores that go out of business. I have these 4 plastic towers a library threw out. They used to go on a rotating carousel-which was too big to fit in my apartment. I guess they used to hold VHS tapes. They are open on 4 sides and not nearly tall enough to fit Mego's yet

I was hoping to remove the horizontal wall in it and replace it with a taller piece to hold 8 inch Megos, 9 inch Playmates Treks and some 12 inch figures. If I could close up most of the sides and attach a door to open & close the case it would seem almost perfect. I could adapt it to spin on it's own axis but that might be a bit more complicated than I could achieve. I may just have someone build a wood base and top hat for them. I'm at work but I'll take some pics and try to post them when I get home.

Sorry, but I fell assleep in front of the TV after getting home last night. Checking Best Buy's site I can't find the shelf unit I bought. They carry it in-store and it is 1/2 the price of what is listed on their site.

They also list this which is pretty nice and cheaper still at $44.95:

          Measures 43-1/5"H x 9-2/5"W x 15"D

You might also try Ikea for display case furniture. I'll try to take a pic of my Library find tonight when I get home.

Another route, if you have the space, is glass display cabinets. Great for viewing diaoramas & playsets and also hands off if you've got kids or dogs or monkeys, but also hard to come by and expensive. I helped tear down a Sunglass Hut at the Mall once for a temp job, the guy in charge said I could have the old cases, which I promptly sold for a nice load of cash. I would have kept some but didn't have my own place at the time and wasn't collecting. Seems like the pawn shops and flea markets snatch those things up like kids in a candy store. Still if you had the room, It would be a sweet way to show off the figures in a soft lighted display.
"Steel-like jaws clacked away, each bite slashing flesh from my body - I used my knife and my hands, and when they were gone, my bloody stumps - and yet the turtles came."

I wish I had the room for displays. I DO have room on the walls though. I wonder if Ikea has displays with glass for cheap...let me see

Ikea used to sell the Detolf which is a toy collector's friend. I don't know if they have JSYK stores in the US but they sell some nice display cases as well.

I have 5 department store jewelry cases in storage (1-5' long, 2-4' long and 2-2' square) just waiting for our new house to be built so I can put them to good use. However, I would love something with some height to it like you see in antigue store or like Austin has. But they are so expensive if you can even find them.

If you live in a metropolitan area, check the yellow pages for somebody who sells used store fixtures. They're often cramped stores in industrial strip malls, the owners tend to have a rotating stock and often will call you if they get a trophy case in. I've gotten some good deals..

The problem is Montgomery is not that big a city but I'll check around. Birmingham is our largest city and is only 90 miles away if I can find something there. Well worth the drive IMO.

Yeah, you might not get much out of it then. Always good to check the papers though!

That's funny, there is a JSYK store opening up near us this weekend (I never even heard of the place before. To me it sounded like an IKEA knockoff or something ) I never thought about checking the place out for display cases, but now I believe I will.

I like Ikea's Billy bookcases. I've replaced some of the shelves with glass and they look pretty spiffy. I'd like to add glass doors, but the damn doors cost more than the whole bookcase itself.

They are an Ikea knockoff, they have their own version of a Detolf and one that is twice as wide that I wish i'd discovered earlier....

That sounds promising. The main reason why I've stayed away from buying a Detolf is because it seems too narrow for my liking. (they look cool in pictures, but whenever I actually look at one in the store, it doesn't really work for me)

Here's a pic of one of those libray fixtures. I have 4 and they'll need some work. It looks like each one will hold a lot of figures. As it is now stands it's 6 leves tall & each level is 7 & 3/4 in hieght. I'd like to make them taller to fit 12" Megos and 9" Playmates Trek figures.
