Vintage Mego: Planet of the Apes Fortress

This week’s Vintage Mego puts together the giant Mego Planet of the Apes Fortress Playset from 1975 and lets you get a good look at what’s inside. We also talk about the sales numbers for the Mego Planet of the Apes range and discover that Apes were very popular even after the TV…

always loved the Apes line. It was also one that my mom bought me a good amount of. I had this set from Christmas. Probably of the following year or maybe even as late as '77. loved it but alas the cardboard set did not lend itself to long life

My friend had this and I was intensely envious. I like having one now a lot, though I wish it was vinyl-clad.

One can also display the two levels separately as additional Ape City buildings.

In restrospect, the treehouse seems like the archeological dig/outpost in the first film, Mego really created a whole POTA world that was unmatched by WGSH.
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I enjoyed the video. They really promoted the "sun reflector." They made it sound so high tech. lol

I always wanted a few of these to assemble into Ape City, but didn't get to enjoy one until I was an adult.

Good in every way… I love it, and she approves:

Thanks for taking one for the team and unboxing this Brian. I enjoyed your little quip at the end of the video!

Heh, it was pretty painless all things considered.

The problem with most videos is, I mess up the whole place to make them.

I'm glad everything was there. Its so disappointing/heartbreaking when the excitement of opening a boxed set is missing a part. In fact, I was crushed to see the prison. I didn't realize mine was supposed to come with one until I watched your video

I still love this playset. I really like Mego's choice of multi-coloring the walls rather than going with the single-toned walls of the movie sets. I realize the ecru color would have been more realistic, but the multi-colors make this more playful. It was interesting to hear it was only sold for a year. That might explain why I knew of the other playsets, but not this one.

^^ Only found this crappy pic, but it has the parts list across the top.

see now I knew of this one and the tree house, as I had both. I never knew about the forbidden zone or ape city or any of the smaller things they made such as the throne. or at least I have no memory of knowing about them

This is the one POTA item that I wish I owned. The video is very informative, candid and a highlight during the pandemic. Wonderful to watch. Your passion for Mego runs deep.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.

Could you Trace out the pieces laid flat and scan in those shapes? I'd love to make something for my small mego collection.
