    09/08/16 - Honoring Star Trek's 50th with Mego!

September 8th, 1966 was the day that Star Trek first aired (at least in the US) - one week from today. I plan to honor it with Mego!

When I was a kid in the early 70s, Star Trek became the biggest thing in the world to me, and the first thing I really got obsessed with. Right around that time the Mego figures and the Enterprise playset came out, and there was nothing I wanted more. I never got to have those, however, so it became an unrealized dream that I thought I would never fulfill.

In the late 90s I picked up a Mego Kirk on card in new condition, but with the bubble cut so I could actually take him out and play with him. This was the beginning of the collection I knew I was going to build. When the EMCE repros came out about 10 years later, I began picking those up. Once I had them all, it was time to concentrate on completing the original Mego collection. The 50th anniversary of Star Trek was coming up, and I was hoping that maybe I could complete my Mego Trek collection (at least the figures) by that date. So in the next few years I worked on that.

Now the date is upon us, and I've nearly done it. I have a new in box Enterprise set ready to be assembled and to have stickers applied. I have all but Talos hanging on the wall on cards, ready to be pulled from their partially-open bubbles on September 8th for some new adventures. My placeholder Mission to Gamma VI box is ready to be displayed, still waiting for the set that I hope to fill it with someday. My Telescreen Console is ready for action, and with any luck might still work when I put batteries in it. I even have a new-in-box Palitoy transporter, just in case the main transporter on the Enterprise fails and the crew has to resort to the back-up!

On the 8th, it's all coming out...and I'm going to have the time of my life setting up the results of a 40+ year-long dream come true. And that's how I'm going to observe the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Anybody who wants to join me in this, feel free to post pictures of you and your Mego (or EMCE!) Star Trek collection on this thread on September 8th. I'll be posting mine.

Considering how much of a disappointment some aspects of Star Trek's 50th anniversary have been this year:

      - lawsuit proceeding against a Star Trek fan film (Axanar), and continuing despite JJ Abrams and Justin Lin announcing its withdrawal
      - regulations put in place by CBS/Paramount to ensure that most fan films are all but snuffed out in the future
      - new TV series forcing US viewers to buy a monthly membership to the CBS streaming service to see it (WITH 12 minutes of commercials, mind you), while the rest of the world can get it through Netflix
      - DST/EMCE cloth retro Star Trek revival turns out to be a non-starter, with doubts that we'll see any figures at all this year

I've decided that at least I'm going to be sure I have my own fun-filled celebration. Live long and prosper, Mego and Star Trek!

There's some encouraging Star Trek news: the postage stamps will be available soon!

The H&I (Heroes and Icons) channel has all 6 of the Star Trek TV shows (including the cartoon), and this Sunday they will be showing those along w/ some cool Trek documentaries. I'm almost positive the Decades channel has something planned as well.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

On Sept 8th, the Decades channel will be showing the following anniversary specials at different times throughout the day.

            1. Star Trek: A Captan's Log, hosted by William Shatner.
            2. Nimoy's Star Trek Memories.
            3. Star Trek: Beyond the Frontier, (2007) hosted by Leonard Nimoy.

I also think one of the major networks NBC or CBS will show the episode: The Man Trap at 8:30pm which would
be exactly 50 years to the day (Thursday) and time the episode was first aired.

Cool stuff! I kinda hoped the festivities would pick up towards the end of the year, particularly around the actual anniversary date. I'm hoping I can scoop up copies of those documentaries, since Original Series documentaries seem a little scarce.

Glad to hear the stamps are coming out in the US after all...I was afraid we weren't getting them. I'll plan on picking up a couple sets next post office visit.

I got the usual automated notice from Entertainment Earth that my order for the EMCE Security/Cheron set has been moved forward to September (now that it's not August anymore!). Of the remaining 4 months, this would be the best one to release the set in due to the anniversary date, so I hope it does actually come out this time.

Nice! It wasn't this year, but here's one of my wife and I on the bridge at the Star Trek exhibit in Orlando, FL in 2012...lighting was a bit lousy, though.

So fresh and clean, makes me want one again. I did have one back in the 70's but it was a hand down from a older neighbor kid. It was in great shape but still not new, missing the stools but came with a Spock minus his equipment. I never got any other ST figures to go with it, Spock and Superman fought alot of apes.

Mugato had a lot of cousins out to avenge his death, it seems! Good thing Krypton was in Federation space, right?
