    Vintage Mego Trek

Our 8" friends make a brief appearance in this assume time capsule.

This segment from what has to be local news on a 1976 Star Trek convention being held in Northglenn Mall in Denver, Colorado, is fairly amazing. Not just

That news guy was terrible. He couldnt even speak properly. I wonder who thought it was good idea to put that fool on tv?

I think that news reporter is Napoleon Dynamite's long lost father.

The writer claims not much has changed, but in reality quite a lot has changed. While the basic premise of cons is still the same in theory, cons back then (and even up to at least the early 90s) were much more low-budget, low-key, locally-produced things. And really mostly only actual nerds and dorks (the truly unkempt, socially awkward kind) would go to those things. It was definitely not considered a cool thing to do.

Nowadays there's big money, big crowds, corporate backing, and a whole lot more "coolness factor" involved. In that sense, cons from back in the day and cons now are worlds apart.

Very cool video, though. Love seeing this stuff from way back.

P.S. - Also there is a whole lot less Mego to be found at cons these days, to our dismay!

As fun as this video is, I'd love to see inside that Woolworth store....
