Any Mego 8" Star Wars in future w/ new movies? SDCC reveals?

Mego 8" Star Wars have always been my dream. In 1977 when my Mom told me of new Star Wars figures coming out I automatically assumed they'd be by Mego! An 8" scale C3-PO and R2-D2 to display on my nightstand!

Why doesn't Disney hop on the ReMego bandwagon especially with NEW Star Wars movies coming out? Will SDCC next week reveal anything?

Mego missing out on Star Wars is still saddest Toy Story in history!

I know I'll probably get slapped for this, but I'm actually glad Mego didn't get the Star Wars license back in '77.
I think 8" Mego figures would've been cool, BUT, I don't believe a Mego line would've had the depth and breadth that the Kenner line did. The 8" format would've been very restrictive as far as vehicles go and even worse, the figures themselves would have been grossly out of scale. Han and Luke the same height as Darth Vader and Chewbacca?

I don't believe for a second Mego Star Wars toys would've become the phenomenon they did under Kenner's care. Can you imagine Mego making over 100 different characters for a single license? I can't. They could've done that with Marvel and DC but didn't.
History has shown Kenner as a company that always took chances...Mego always played it safe. That's why they passed on the license in the first place.

Mego had a 9" body it used for its Flash Gordon 9" figures and could have been used for Darth Vader and Chewbacca! Chewie could have had furry bodysuit like Mego Wizard of Oz Lion. Speaking of which Mego could have done Stormtrooper exactly like Oz Tin Man cloth tight bodysuit with plastic armor pieces! Same w/ C-3PO!

Luke, Leia, Han, Kenobi, Stormtrooper, Sandpeople, Death Squad Commander could use 8" Mego body. *Jawa could use Ox Munchikin body! R2-D2 would be totally new!

Mego could have also made 4" figures for vehicles and playsets!

I DO NOW wish Mego had acquired Star Wars license to continue 8" figures in some form and still be around as company today!

True, they could have done the things you mention, but would they have? I don't think so.
I just don't see Mego developing Star Wars to the extent Kenner did. I think there would have been a dozen or so 8" figures, and maybe an undersized Landspeeder much like their Batmobile, but not much else.

        We can only speculate.

I am happy with the way Star Wars toys turned out. I wouldn't change a thing, except I'd go back and save more carded and boxed figures.

I am quite confident that if 8" Star Wars figures are unleashed, I will like them far less than the original Kenner 12" figures, which have toyetic and friendly looking sculpts.

I've stopped hoping for this. After almost 40 years of waiting, it's been enough.
As said, Kenner built a whole universe in that smaller scale, Mego couldn't have. We might have had a Batmobile-like "compacted" landspeeder, maybe. And about a dozen characters, maybe. That universe would have been a lot smaller...

I'm also very careful with my expectations for a possible 8" SW Retro Cloth line. As we're seeing now with the POTA line, don't expect a huge offering of many characters. It's still a very small target audience with a limited offering.

Besides, could you imagine the grief Mego would have gotten back in the day if they came up with the Early Bird Package? Kenner got lucky all the way around. As to now,we complain about all of the hoops EMCE has to jump through with Marvel. Imagine all the hoops someone would have to jump through with Star Wars.

the overall trend seems to be swinging to 4" and 5 points of articulation. I would expect a 'retro' 4" line before any 8" items.

At least from 1996-2005 Kenner/Hasbro made 160+ 12" Star Wars cloth-costumed figures for $20 each! I just wish they could have used actors' likenesses!

I remember the 12" Hoth Han/ Tauntaun TRU exclusive was $50 in 1997 and now the same deal by Sideshow is $550- $200 for Hoth Han and $350 for Tauntaun (better have an opening belly to put Luke in! lol

The Hasbro Joe buck they used was pretty kid resilient as well. Great play value.

Can you IMAGINE the depth of character releases a line like Star Wars would have if FTC got it? Oh wow...

Yeah, I really love the 12" Hasbro figures. They did use the actor's likenesses...they just retain the toy aesthetic. The outfits were very well done and you just can't beat them for the money. Hasbro also made some really nice 12" Universal Monsters in 1997. Their Wolfman remains my favorite toy version of him. It has a better likeness than the Sideshow version!

For all of you claiming Mego wouldn't have done much, look past the 8" world and realize what was already on the shelves while Kenner was scrambling. If you don't think this line inspired them, you're wrong.

Also, let's look at a master toy license like WGSH, a pile of 8", playsets, vehicles, two 3 3/4" lines with vehicles and playsets of their own, 6" diecast and magnetic figures, stuffed and talking dolls, elastic heroes, a plethora of 12" characters. I think Mego would have done the same with Star Wars, if something sold, they extrapolated on it. That's a fact.

I think we would have seen pretty much what happened with Kenner. Early on, they had not only 3 3/4 figure but the 12 inch line. The 12 inch line faded despite the cloth costumes and greater detail as kids favored the smaller format due the vehicles/playsets. I'm sure parents also favored the smaller format due to the low price point, even then for the figures. So I don't think it's crazy to imagine Mego going in the direction they did for say, Buck Rogers just with much more product, as it would have been hugely successful.
