    ReMego is everywhere these days

So, I took the family on a completely random adventure today. Just hopped in the car with a road atlas and promised ice cream at some point.

An hour into the journey, we come across a small town my grandparents used to take me to as a kid. If it has 20,000 people I'd be shocked. Almost the entire down town is closed (cause it's Sunday) but there's a used movie/video game store that I decide to check out.

I walk into to see Snake Plissken, Leatherface, Misfits guy and a couple other NECA 8" characters.

That was just the beginning, during the rest of the day I saw Bif Bang Pow, NECA, EMCE and FTC figures across the landscape today.

It was pretty trippy to see so much retro love out there.

It's great to see so much Mego inspired product out there. And the thing is, the licensing possibilities have never been as vast or as competitive. We have children from the Mego age creating everything they never got or never saw. Add in all of the movies and television shows that came after and it's a virtual explosion of product wherever you look. Golden times my friend. Golden times.

That is pretty awesome. The movement is growing!! Way overdue for a solid ToysRuS presence, though. I need to make a trip around town and see what I can come up with. I wonder what Figures line will make it to ToysRus (if that is where they want to be)? Maybe Scooby Doo, SuperFriends or Harry Potter?

This is definitely the Golden Age of ReMego. It's an embarrassment of riches, and there is at this point something for everyone in the 8" cloth format.

I've been on a small tour of the Southern Ontario region in the past month (arguably the entire past year too) and there is scarcely a comic shop or pop culture or collectibles outlet that does not carry a product by EMCE, BifBangPow, FTC or NECA. I've been conducting some informal, anecdotal market research at the same time, and from what I've been told by folks who either own or work in these stores that it does appear casually, that the nostalgia ReMego product is generally very well supported by guys our age. It's NECA that seems to get credit though, in the past year for attracting a more contemporary and even younger collector to the format in the past year, especially with 1/6th figures now priced out of casual range. With NECA 8" stuff showing up at Toys R Us here in Canada, it will be interesting to see how they fare, and what is sustainable beyond the current niche we occupy. Hopefully Scooby Doo or Harry Potter will be able the lure an even younger demographic to the format. I'm anxious to see how sustainable this is and where we are at next year.

Notably strong supporters of the format...

It was my Dad's 70th, so I was in Center City Philadelphia for the past two days and decided to stop by the "cool" store Brave New World which is located around 2nd and Arch and I saw some FTC figures in person.

Sure, I've been critical of FTC's WGSH-genre choices from the start---I mean, to the point of overkill in clashing with others on these boards---that said, I've always admired/envied FTC's task and execution to a certain extent, and CERTAINLY seeing Bizarro and the re-scaled Myx in person was a huge thrill. They were priced at $31 apiece, and I probably would've purchased both, but the guy working there wasn't in the best of moods when I addressed him regarding the insides of a ROCKY NECA box, and I was too put off to pay the in-store mark-up. All I wanted was not to be verbally sneered at if I was going to make that kind of purchase.

Anywho...back to the "thrill" of seeing that new WGSH-type product in stores---pretty neat---and, I'm quite close to pulling triggers on any number of Mego 8-inch goodness, as long as I can rationalize it in my budget presently, as there is such a HUGE selection out there for the adult collector both WITHIN as well as OUTSIDE the 8-inch cloth-clothed action figure format.

Ironically, my one recent 8-inch Megoey purchase was bought from and created by the guy who started this thread. I've been re-working my toy display recently and thought it could use a more "Mego-only" type section... so, now displayed alongside my 8-inch WGSH vintage/WGSH customs, my CAHs, and my Dukes 3 3/4th inch line is the Adams/Heiler Mego Museum Super Collector 8-inch figure, which I love and which I will think of this place and my interesting online adventures whenever I catch a glance of Super Collector, right along side the awesome Holcomb World's Greatest Toys book.

it is indeed THE era where Mego 8-inch inspired format is coming into it's own as far as availability to our collector's niche. My hope is that off-the-bat, it does not overreach in it's goals, and it that it plays more directly to it's core audience. If the current marketers can keep themselves in step with their actual consumer-base, there are many more great years ahead!

Wow! It's really neat to see those pictures. It's nearly like going back in time to see figures like those on store shelves.

We found a place that gives you a bucket for $3. It was so bad i had to go get the bikes and enforce a mandatory ride.

Wow, that must be nice to see figures in the comic stores. Dr. Comics & Mr. Games here in Oakland won't even carry them anymore, b/c they're peg warmers. And I never see any adults over 40 in there. So the kids don't know Megos, and obviously, neither do their parents. I saw a dad and his son pass up the RAHs and EMCE's in favor of some smaller plastic alien looking figures for sale there. To hear him talk, he didn't even know what they were.

You'd kinda expect them here, but a I love how re-Megos are simply mixed in with other figures here in the back of Toy Tokyo in NYC. You can see SMDM, Battlestar Galactica, 60's Batman, Dr, Who, Mike Tyson and just out of range next to 60's Robin is WGSH Penguin redux-
