Mego Museum Interview with Sculptor Andrew Covalt

Sam Noir interviewed profilic ReMego sculptor Andrew Covalt for the latest Mego Museum news letter.

Andrew Covalt is extremely skilled at evoking the classic look and feel of
seventies Mego Action Figures with his sculpts. In recent years he’s worked on ReMego toylines such as Mattel’s DC Retro Action, Diamond/EMCE’s Star Trek, Bluntman and Chronic, and his most recent releases include Odeon Toys’ Captain Canuck and Diamond/EMCE’s Spider-Man. We’ve compiled a complete checklist of his work at the end of this interview.

How did you get your start as a sculptor?

Around 1995, I was inspired to make customs by looking at Charlee
Flatt’s figures and head sculpts, so I bought some SuperSculpy and just
jumped in and started trying to sculpt a head. I did everything wrong
right off the bat! I bought black sculpy because I thought it looked cool,
only to realize it obscured the shadows and I couldn’t see what I was
doing. After I finally got a decent head shape, I decided to bake it so I
wouldn’t knock it out of whack, but then realized I forgot to make
eyeholes so I could sculpt the eyes. When it finally looked finished, I
added a neck placed it on a body only to realize it was way too big. My
first attempt was a complete flop, but I kept at it anyway.

Great interview! Andrew has done some great sculpts and it's easy to see why people keep going back to him. I would be curious to know when he attended Joe Kubert's School of Art. I was there briefly in the 80's and would love to know if perhaps we shared space in the same classes. Enjoyable read and insightful on so many levels. Thanks for sharing! Andrew is definitely another invaluable member to the Museum and our hobby.

Andrew helped me with my custom project last year. I knew he was the right person for the job and he didn't disappoint. His head sculpt for my custom "Rocky" GI Joe prototype figure came out incredible! I first met Andrew at Mego Meet in 2011 I believe it was. Great guy and a pleasure to work with.

Andy is Aces! I was aware of many of the great sculpts but not the Jay & silent Bob. Now I definitely need to get those figures.
I'm a huge fan, love his work, and enjoy chatting with him.

A really humble man of MANY talents... I totally did not know about his huge list of professional comic book credits! Not to mention his work in animation and design.

A collection of animation background paintings and other random stuff.

Nice feature on a very talented fellow. When you look at that portfolio of figures, it is really apparent that Andy has fingerprints all over this 8 inch revival.

Loved checking out his other sculpts on his Studio website. Some can be bought on Doc Mego' site, but I would like to have one of those Hawkman sculpts! He also has a great sculpt (and paint) of the late OX Baker. I remember Felix the Cat having an excellent animated series from the 90s. My two girls loved it.

IN a few of our conversations I learned he and I were working in comics at the same time doing the same thing... with the same equipment. I was a colorist for Sky Comics using Dr. martin watercolors/dyes and he was doing the same thing with Valiant at the exact same time. However, he had the much sweeter gig and was far more talented. Yeah, I got something he and I have been talking about for two Mego Meets coming this June that he worked on. I don't want to give it up just yet, but it turned out so awesome.
I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

I enjoyed this interview immensely--and what a thrill top see that Hawkman!

I probably met you Andy at MM 2013, but it was a (very fun) blur that Saturday.

Thanks Andy for your contributions to keeping 1/9th cookin'.

Wow, everybody! Thanks for the kind words. It's been really strange to see my name on the front page of the museum today. You are all the COOLEST!!
