Gotta feel bad for Mego in that deal. They were expecting an exciting Star Wars type movie (and profits) and instead got over two hours of reaction shots of people looking at a cloud.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I am in the teeny tiny minority that thinks ST:TMP is one of the best Trek films, lol. I like the slower pace and the storyline.

Love the cover Scott, great stuff.
You really captured the feel of the ST-TMP Rainbow poster that hung my wall for years.

That art is the Alpha-Omega bomb! Amazing.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.

Thanks, I really cranked it out! That moment Neal described was always so vivid in my mind it was easy to draw. Can't mistake Marty's hair!

I vividly recall seeing this movie in the theater. I had really been looking forward to it and then fell deeply asleep midway through. It always makes me drowsy. I hear I need to check out Robert Wise's directors cut.

Can't believe it's been 35 years, being a Trekkie nut, I was somewhat disappointed with ST: TMP,
but not to terribly upset, when they followed with Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock, which I did
                like both those very much.

I love the comic Neal and Marty! I think Marty was more proud of that hair than anything he ever did with Mego.

Great picture Scott! I'm not a huge fan of the film but I really like the merchandise that Mego created for it.

From Amazing Spider-Man 203, maybe Neal and Marty went to see Black Hole after?

The movie was boring and I remember conning my dad into it on Boxing day (he hated it, should have picked the black hole) and regretting it. It didn't matter, I was swept up in "Star Trek fever" and the onslaught of marvel comics, power records and Mego action figures was enough to keep me going.

I remember the long wait in line at the theater we went to. I think I was one of the few 12 year olds who really liked the movie, but I think even then I saw it as a gateway for more trek to happen. My big complaint about the mego figures, as a kid back then in '79, was that the selection of characters wasn't going to allow me to imagine new stories. Iliya and Decker were of no interest to me and I don't recall seeing the smaller figures or maybe enough of them, as I only remember thinking only Kirk and Spock were the only others made besides those other two.
                          It's all good!

I think I remember the smaller figures, but to me they were nowhere near as interesting as Star Wars---there's nothing toyetic about the costume designs.

The Mego guys really thought the profit was in 12 inch dolls because you can sell at a higher price point, but I just don't see a lot of kids wanting this figures even back then. Same with Black Hole and that's to say nothing of the zombie heads.

I sure wish they'd have done these in 8 inch.

I wonder if EMCE DST ever considered doing a line based on the Trek movies.

They really should've pushed the alien figures more at retail. I don't even remember seeing those in stores.

I saw the movie in theaters, but don't remember the experience. I do however remember marveling at the Happy Meal box artwork.
