Your first Mego encounter...

Happy New Year everyone.

I think this type of thread has gone around before, but with the new year and new folks joining the boards, I thought it would be fun for everyone to tell either about the first Mego toy they got as a kid or their fondest Mego memory.

For me, even though I had a bearded Action Jackson prior to this moment, the first time I recognized Mego as a company came from staring at my Solid Boxes that I kept my RM Robin and RC Batman in. These guys have been with me now for 40+ years. My mom was treating me with a trip to Toys-R-Us (or we were picking up a birthday gift for someone else, my memory on that is foggy), on an end cap were Solid Boxes of these guys. I came home with Superman, Batman, and Robin. They were on, what to 5-6 year old me, was a higher shelf and it was my mom who noticed them and asked "what are these". Of course we had to pull one out to see what it looked like and Robin was the box that was opened. My mom then was not sure this was the type of thing that I would want but upon her having a few seconds trouble sliding him back into the box, I was able to assure her that was exactly what I would want. Of course, Batman had to go along and somehow I talked her into Superman as well. I played with these guys a ton, but always took care of them, made sure that no pieces were missing and always put them back away into their boxes (sans inserts). Of course, the boxes had the company logo on them....This is both my fondest memory regarding these 8" action figures, but also one of the first times that I began to notice company names on packaging.

Wow, those are beauties....
I remember going to the Alexander's in Da Bronx with my mom and saw the same counter display. I got the batman and the rest is history as they say. I remember going to visit a family member upstate and bring that RC batman, and he flipped out over it because they didn't have them there yet. We wound up selling him mine and went back to get me another.
Oh that counter display, man that was something to see........

I've posted this a few times and even brought it up on the Christmas pod cast. It was Macy's in Parkchester in the Bronx for me. Yes guys Macy's used to have a kick Butt toy section. Like its yesterday I can see the Solid Box counter display... Hold on I feel a tear coming on... If I had only known back then what I know now... There were 3 of us so needless to say there weren't just 1 of each around the house.

For me as a kid they were just super hero toys, just something to play along with the comics. It wasn't until 1996 when I find a Robin at an antique store that I reconnected with them.
I had a Batman, Robin Hulk, Riddler ,Penguin , Joker , Captain America, and a Hulk and Falcon that came from a garage sale. They were fun toys that were replace when Star Wars came out. Between the sandbox, the bike rides and matches the super heros really turned out not to be so super after all.
I'm glad I had them back then, they led to a hobby, a hunt through flea markets and sales and antique malls and best of all this place and all the great people I have met and became friends with.
A 40 year old piece of 8 inch plastic super hero has made a huge impact in my life , cheers to Megos !

When I was about four or five years old, friends of my parents came to visit, and their son brought with him two wonderful toys that I had never seen before, a Mego 8" Batman and Superman. I instantly fell in love with them and knew I just had to own these. After about a week of badgering my mother, I finally came home from kindergarten one afternoon and saw a brand new, shiny removable cowl Batman sitting on the kitchen counter waiting for me. And then the love affair began....

While I don't remember the actual purchase, I know I've had my Mego Spider-Man since I was six which places it in 1977. Superman, Batman & The Hulk followed but I'm not sure what years. Somewhere it that time frame I also got the the Trek crew & bridge. The Fonz and lastly Bo & Luke Duke. Also at some point my mom found me a boxed Iron Man at a flea market was a big, big deal. Even with the with that somewhat limited assortment I appreciated that they were the same body and could share a universe. It was somethings special when I could go a friends house and he could add Captain America & Shazam to the mix as well as a Klingon. I've often recounted how frustrating it was as I got older and would ask for more heroes and villains I had seen advertised in comic books but of course they had been removed from the line at that point. It's something that stuck with me in a way even Star Wars doesn't for a simple reason: I pretty much got every SW figure from the first movie on until I lost interest, nothing really left unfulfilled. Also I imagine it has something to do with being a lifelong comic/superhero fan and these being the superhero toys of my youth.

We had a Nichols and a store called Kings I don't remember seeing megos at either store but Kings had a wall of Close Encounters Alien figures.My first Mego was Captain Kirk I got him at Mcrorys.

Having been born in 1973, I missed the great years of Mego as a child. I remember getting the large sized Hulk and my brother getting Batman at either Christmas 1981 or 1982 but of course, the line was finished soon after.

I know my mother had a heck of a time trying to find stuff for me after my birthday in 1980. We had just moved in to a new apartment and right next to me was a girl a few years older who played with boy toys (I couldn't believe it). So we started hanging out and eventually I invited her to my 7th birthday. We were sitting in the living room with her mom one day when she asked what I wanted for my birthday. I told her the green guy, Greedo (from Star Wars). Much to my surprise (and delight), she had no idea what I was talking about so ended up getting me Repto! My mother tried to find others, but it must have been a clearance toy by then and I only ended up with one more before GI Joe hit me but I played with that thing non-stop!

If only the line had lasted a little longer.... I was born in '73 and was finally starting to want superhero figures about '79-80. Somehow I did manage to get a stretch hulk until I ruined him. He was really cool though and I enjoy stretching and smelling him. Seeing what was on the inside was just to tempting.

I probably would have discovered them if Western Auto sold them (my toy outlet when I was real young,lol).

I was about 5 or 6 when the WGSH came out. A kid my brother and I knew was in front of his house playing with Robin (removable mask!) and we were astonished. Cut to a few days later (pretty sure it was Christmas) and BOOM. My folks got us Batman and Robin (solid boxed), Superman AND Aquaman. To say we were excited was an understatement. Not long after, Capt. America and Spider-Man (Circle Suit, yo!) showed up, thanks to my grandparents, and the Mego love affair began in earnest.

The following Christmas was all about the Supervator and additions to our Mego army.

for me as a kid ,i got a action jackson figure ,but the mego bug hit when i & my brothers saw the planet of the apes figures the first five ,and
that opened our eyes to all the mego product ,and although we were ape crazy ,we bought superheros which sent us hero crazy,and after school
every day we would watch star trek ,and then there they were the first five at LLoyd center mall Woolworths,at that time i also watch Gilligans
Island also ,and wondered if they would make those,well they didnt ,now after 40+ years ,Figures are doing megos of this favorite classic .

The first time I encountered a Mego in the flesh would have to be sometime around 2001.
I ordered a KISS Paul Stanley Mego from a KISS dealer, along with a KISS Peter Criss "ALIVE II" poster.
Being born in 1987, I was only 13 at the time and obviously missed the Mego craze of the 70's.
I don't remember the condition of the doll, but I have since upgraded to one that has never been removed from the inner insert.
Would love to finish off the KISS set and get my hands on the Wizard Of Oz line.

My first encounter was on Christmas morning in 1972.

Under the tree were four small wrapped presents.

Mego WGSH, all solid boxes.

Superman ~ With two "S" decals, one on his chest and one on his cape.
Batman ~ Removable Cowl version
Robin ~ Removable mask
Aquaman ~ Nylon shorts

Best. Christmas. Ever.

To this day I have no idea how my parents managed to get hold of figures which were supposedly released only in NYC that Christmas season all the way down in Beaumont, TX.
