BACK ISSUE #61 contains an article on the first DC/Marvel joint project...which was NOT the Superman vs. Spider-Man tabloid! It was the comic adaptation of MGM's Wizard of Oz movie.
According to the article by Jack Abramowitz, with inside information from the book's writer, Roy Thomas, both DC and Marvel were working on adaptations of the Wizard of Oz, and neither knew it!
Stan Lee apparently learned of DC's version at an event held by "some toy company", that was promoting the launch of Oz toys.
That company, of course was Mego, and the event was the famous Toy Fair event that reunited the living cast members of the film.
Lee and then-DC publisher Carmine Infantino decided to pool their resources, and DC and Marvel co-published the comic.
But not for Mego, the cold war between DC and Marvel may have not thawed!!!
For more on this very interesting project (and some article by a guy named Chris Franklin) check out Back Issue #61, the tabloid-sized extravaganza about..tabloids and treasuries!
