Space Farms in NJ has Megos on display..

So last week I took the family out on a bit of an adventure. When I was a young lad in the 70's and 80's, I remember seeing commercials for a place called Space Farms in Sussex, NJ. It was a zoo and had other museum type displays, all on a farm. After a quick search, I found out it still exists. Also, the web site stated that it had a vintage toy display! So I packed the fam into the mini-van and we headed out. It's a pretty cool place, very family friendly. Lot's of antique cars , American Indian artifacts, taxidermy and all kinds of other antique items. They do have some toys on display, but it's pretty sad. There were a couple of Mego items, so I thought I'd share some pics here....

I went there two years ago cause you know, SPACE Farm. There's gonna be rockets and satellites and stuff. Turns out the guy that owned this farm last name was Space and he's basically a hoarder with a lot of acres where they charge you admission to look at the junk they've put away over the last 6 or 7 decades. The really sad thing is that almost every single display looks pretty much like that haphazard shelf with the sad looking faded Batmobile. It felt like I was in a junk store where nothing was for sale. I guess the collection of about 100 pre 1950 cars and motorcycles were cool but they seemed more "abandoned in a barn" than "proudly displayed" and if you got tired of that you could always go outside to look at large animals in small cages in their "zoo" and have your kids play on the mid-century swing sets and slides complete with chipped and peeling lead paint. If you told me you were going there, I would have warned you...did you have a good time?

OMG, I love Space Farms!!!! Go there every year. I've been in the toy shed, but never noticed that Batmobile! They also have the largest collection of Madballs action figures I've ever seen, but they're upstairs in the lodge museum area. Yes, Space Farms isn't like a modern zoo/museum; it is more like a 1950's roadside attraction that's been frozen in time. And that's exactly why I love it.

Yeah, actually, we had a blast..it was rustic, small and a bit cheesy, but I think that is part of the charm. We went on a Tuesday morning, so there was maybe one other family there. The kids had an awesome time...they especially loved feeding the animals.

They also have the largest collection of Madballs action figures I've ever seen

Yep...my daughter wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Looks like lone ranger got taken out from a hundred yards in the knee cap, slow death ahead for him. At least the man in black next to his horse looks like he got a merciful quick death with a what appears to be a bullet hole to the forehead...

WOW our school used to take us to Space farm for field trips back in the early 80's. Had no idea it was still around. Back then I recall a black bear was their icon or main attraction. Remember some rubber things in the gift shop but that was it.

Because you guys asked for it, here's what it looks like. I guess if you went there as a kid you'd be nostalgic for it but with all the great roadside attractions that have closed around here, I can't believe this is the one that survived. I went there as a child and I have no love for this place at all. Been there, done that, left the T-Shirt in the Gift Shop. Here's a fun game..is the last picture from 1979 or 2009. Hard to tell cause this place is stuck in time.

I still go to the US 1 Flea Market a few times a month only now it's unfortunately a Lowes 18 Plex Movie Theater. The um, left behind grave and tombstones from when the lot was cemetery is still in the back of the parking lot though just like it was back in the day when the Flea Market was still there.

Awesome! Perhaps dull to you, but I will gladly take a trip to that time capsule one of these days. You gotta love the fist sized hole in the lions cage. Does he at least have a larger area to roam in?
