    Beginner Tips or Advice

    Mego Master Minds,

My name is Seth (31), and I recently got back into comics. I was watching The Big Bang Theory and saw the Mego Spock episode and decided to look into Megos. Your site came up and I've spent a lot of time learning about them. I bought my first Mego, The Thing. I got it for a good price and your site helped, but I was wondering if you had any advice for beginners or tips?

Thanks and looking forward to collecting..

I am a beginner too. What I have done that has really helped is spent a lot of time in the museum. There really is an incredible amount of research that has gone into the many facets of the site. It is almost unbelievable that this is a free resource.

Do a bit of research on pricing and learn to recognize reproduction parts. Set yourself a small collecting goal. Patience is the key, there will always be another, unless it is ultra rare and only comes up every 5-10 years. Then the kids gloves are off

Welcome! We were figuring the Big Bang episode would bring some new members, and it has!

Like Kotter said, check the Museum itself, and if you have specific questions here, feel free to ask them.

My first tip is have fun. Seek out what interests you. If you have patience and a little dough, you can build you a nice Mego collection that won't break your bank account. Some Mego items are VERY pricey, but there are many that can be had for a reasonable price, and it's fairly easy to get a nice collection together. Mego made an entire universe of figures in different formats. Lots to choose from.

Take your time. Get to know the people here, and start off by getting some of the bargains. Don't hurry, if you don't get a certain figure, another is to come along really soon. Don't fret about the rarer figures, you can't have them all.

And it does take time to establish friendships, so be patient. It's worth it!

            To echo Clem- PATIENCE!

Sure there are super rare items, but most Megos are plentiful and hunting them down is half the fun. Once you've hung around here for a bit, you'll be more confident in your purchases and you'll know when to pull the trigger quickly. I can't tell you how many lines I've finished by simply waiting and holding to a price I want to pay.

Also, take the time to go through the galleries here. They are chock full of great information that will help you make smart purchases.

Finally, pull up a chair, put your feet and enjoy the company here at the Museum. I've got as much if not more from the conversations and friends I've made here than my entire collection.

It took me about 8 years to build a 100% complete all original Conan one piece at a time.

Total cost (when the dust settled) was about $15.00 --- besides the savings it was super fun doing it.

My advice, s--------stretch out the fun to make it last longer

Good advice from everyone. I might also add that you would greatly benefit from Ben Holcomb's book Mego 8" Super-Heroes: World's Greatest Toys! if you could find a copy.

                  Now that's patience!
Three years ago, I bought a Shogun Warrior Godzilla from a US seller for cheap. But he charged a lot to ship it internationally (as it's huge). I had it sent to a buddy in Vegas. I'll be picking it up myself...in 2014...

Happy to hear the exposure on BBT has brought you here! Hopefully other new folks lurking will introduce themselves as well.

The Going Rate subsection down in Auction Watch is a new community project introduced this past year. hopefully it will help many newcomers figure out pricing.

As has been mentioned, repro parts can make things a bit tricky, but luckily there is the Terrific Accessories Check to help you out.

Other than that, collect what makes you happy. Whether it's the nostalgic buzz or just love of the characters. There are so many different kinds of characters, both vintage and new in this format that there is guarantee to be something for everyone, whether their passions are superhero, SCIFI, horror, western, animation, celebrity, classic television etc. If it doesn't exist, there are plenty of customizers willing to help bring your dream figure into being.

For a pricing overview (what you can actually expect to pay) check out "the going rate" sticky thread in Auction Watch. Just because a seller lists something as "rare" doesnt make it so.

I think the best rule of thumb would be, collect what you like, and what makes you happy.

Another great rule of collecting, at least IMHO, collect what you can afford. We've seen a few members throught the years buy, buy, buy, only to turn around and sell, sell, sell.
maybe set aside 10% or so of total income for your collection.

welcome to the boards, stick around, have fun.
