    Fighting Yank Astronuat Rarest!!!

I know Fighting Yank ranks low on many Mego collectors radars. One of the coolest and rarest Mego Fighting Yank pieces is not mentioned or shown at all in the Mego Museum archieves. This injustice must come to an end! Ok maybe a glitch more than an injustice but we can fix it!
    Here's a pic:

What!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who is that guy? He is the 2nd Fighting Yank head sculpt commonly called Tommy Gunn. The package says MEGO 1970 too! What the.. %$#@ is going on here? You tell me. Anybody know more?

Interesting has one ever surfaced? I found some Fighting Yank rarities recently and will be featuring them on the blog in the near future.

This was a grail of my childhood a friend had it. It took me years to figure out the who, what, why, where, and when. It's not in any of the books that I could find and very very difficult to obtain. The 1970 series of Fighting Yank uniform boxes are scarce so not many people have had them in hand. There is also a unique Fighting Yank figure box to go with the uniforms. I have owned 2 sets loose and do have nice pics of figures if needed.

The Astronaut Suit is hard to put on a figure and is made out of nylon. Another problem is that some are too small to fit the figure though some fit the bigger Gijoe. They can rip easily. My guess the Astronaut was plaqued with production problems and cut from production or a decline in interest of astronauts. The Snow Ski set replaced it on back of package in next series. Another puzzler is the entire Mego 1970 set is hard to find. Could it have been a distribution experiment?

            Fascinating stuff!

I'd also like to add that the Astronaut suit might have been dumped due to anything related to space (Matt Mason, Outer Space Men) dropping in sales after the moon shot.

It's pretty well documented that space toys were dead in 1970.

True! But this entire year seems to be scarce,I wonder if something else was going on with Mego. The Astronaut set has few accessories, just a uniform. No gun or anything. Could retailers have have demanded more or could sales slowed up so much that Mego was still using up old 60s stock?
