What would you do if you got....

...a really reasonable offer for your Mego's...

in my case, I am talking about a virtually "complete" set (complete as far as I am concerned, though there are some variants I might one day obtain)...and while the number might seem "staggering" to some and "pitance" to others, it is actually a little below my cost, so it would be a "loss" for me to sell (not much, but a loss none the less)

    would you strongly consider it?
would you sell and start over?
    would you politely decline?

just curious what you would do....

Only if I really, really, really, really needed the money. Today, it seems like there's much more competition for loose megos, let alone boxed/carded, which means you're going to overpay for some. Also, although I don't know the extent of your collection, I seem to recall you buying some of the VERY HARD TO FIND carded figs and you might have to wait a lifetime to reclaim those beauties. The thrill of the hunt has been replaced by the frustration of the snipe (or shill bidding or out and out scummy scammer thief taking your money and runnin'). That's my story and I'm sticking to it....Bottom line: After all that, they are just toys (or fond memories), so just ask yourself - how would you feel if they were gone tomorrow? I'm not just talking about missing them, you probably would, but regret about selling them.
Honestly, 90+% of my toys I could sell without regrets, but there are a few that I'd regret until I replaced it/them....sorry for the long-windedness...David

If you need the money, then consider it.

If you don't need the money, will you be done permanently
with Megos, or will you find yourself chasing them down
again? If the latter, then you will spend more to get them
back and it will be a greater loss - but fun to collect all over again.

I personally would consider it. If you ever contemplated parting with your collection before this offer, selling everything at once could less painful than selling it off little by little. You have great display pics and have shared them here and probably saved by many. With the offer being slightly below your cost, I am sure there are pieces you never thought you would make your money back on. The thrill of the hunt is definitely also a factor. My fondest memories of collecting were early on when I needed everything and was in a buying frenzy giving my mailman huge biceps with all the packages he was delivering. Cleaning the slate may rejuvenize you. Based on your past experience, it wouldn't take long before you got most of it back.

The only sure thing would be that those few variants you actually needed would finally surface shortly after you sell everything.
Common sense is not that common.

I personally don't have the resourses or money to rebuid my Mego collection if I ever sold it. It would have to be a substantial amount of money for me to sell it all at once. Could it ever happen, sure - money talks. However, I know Rick has the skills and talent to rebuild as he has done a couple of times before. But I would not sell it for a loss, even a little one.

                Live life with no regrets....

only do it if you will have no regrets getting rid of them.

If you don't need the money then why even bother?

I couldn't do it. I'd have too many second thoughts about doing it.

                    hello all...
I guess I made my thread to specific...I apologize...I didn't mean to ask for personal advice (though thank you to those that offered!)...I meant, what would you do if you were in a the same situation as me (as in with "your" collection)... would you sell your collection if someone offered you $X , would you never sell your collection at any price...would you be temtped?

so I guess I will answer my own query...for me, it is not about the money...I never spend any $ I can't afford to be without...I consider any $'s spent on my personal collection as "lost" to my "portfolio" but gained in the intangibles such as the hunt, joyful memories, personal attachment, etc...so whether it is $5000 or $500,000, it is not relevant to my situation...

I guess for me, the "hunt" is just as important as the acquisition... sure, I love to look at my collection...I probably inspect it, or reminisce about childhood memories with my megos, and sometimes even marvel at it!, and I do this daily (and once I did consider how much I had spent LOL )...

but at what point do you say, "OK", been there , done that... all I have to hunt for these days is upgrades, and the occasional packaging variant... completing my collection has curved my drive to collect...

so, for me, I would consider an offer, even at a loss, if I felt I would somehow benefit from the sale (as in getting to "start over", regardless of how much more they would cost or how much less)...

sometimes too, timing is key...right now, mego's seem to be getting some crazy high prices...my guess is if I broke my collection and sold it, I would make money!... and maybe have some fun reacquiring pieces in the future...

so I guess is really boils down to the "joy" factor...does having them already bring me more joy than hunting for them... time will tell for me...

I spent years acquiring my entire line of 1980s Super Power figures. I had multiple MOC Batmans, Super Amigo Riddler, MISB vehicles, a couple MOC Cyborgs, etc.

Was one of my pride and joys of my collections.

I never thought I would sell it, but someone made me a good offer I couldn't refuse and I sold them all.

To me, any day I can get that collection back but it is fun to explore other avenues sometimes!

At this point, I would not sell, reguardless of the money. The only thing that would prompt me to sell would be actually losing interest in collecting. It is not like I have a Zorro or anything. I would just tell them, "these are mine, go get your own".

I don't think you take the offer unless you want (or need) the money more than you do the figures. A complete set of Megos is not usually achieved by a casual collector. So I have to believe your commitment has been pretty high to achieve a full set. And Paul is absolutely right. To recollect the line later will likely cost you far more money than what your being offered right now. But if it's purely hypothetical in context, I would definitely say never. I get alot of enjoyment out of my collection. And they offset bad days when I have them, so they do serve a greater purpose than just sitting on a shelf.

Putting it like that then, yes, I probably would sell my whole collection if the price was right and try and start over. I love the hunt as much as the next guy and it is part of the fun. I can certainly understand the "ok, I have it, now what do I do?" factor.

                              Interesting question.

It seems to boil down to what's more fun- the hunt or actually having the item.

There are some things I have that have been really difficult to find- I don't know if I could part with some of them.

As much as I enjoy doing the research and hunt- I really like having the stuff I have in my hand.

Someone would have to offer me stupid / crazy / retire for life money to sell.

I know it happens with diecast collectors- I'm sure it applies here as well- burnout and boredom and a sell-off of the collection- only to be followed by regret some time later and then re-acquiring the previous collection.

But, I'm sure there are some who live a been-there-done-that life and once they close a chapter- it's closed!
