Masterful John Romita art. That's the incarnation of Spidey I grew up with. To me, that remains the definitive Spidey look.

Romita, Jr. was doing okay on Iron Man (when Layton was inking him). He seemed to take a turn for the worse (artwise) when he started doing Daredevil (if memory serves). I guess he thought he had to change his art style to try and make as big a mark as Miller did. All he did was take the talent he inherited from his pappy and flush it down a big ol' toilet. IMHO, of course....

Definitely from the comic strip - I remember when it started in the New York
Daily News - Dr. Doom was the first villian (!) which always seemed strange
to me to begin the strip with.

Two factors to the Iron Man run.

            1) He was starting out and kinda had to draw the way they wanted him too.
            2) Layton is a decent artist in his own right (Shadowman was good) and one hell of an inker.

I just don't care for anything Junior has done since the Iron Man stuff. Of course I think Picaso sucks too.

A couple of years ago, I came across this Fireside Book compilation of the classic strips. They don't hold up as well as they did when I was a kid, but it still brought back fond memories. I recall an interview with Stan, where he talked about how he originally did try and include Super Villains like Dr Doom in the early years, but found that the strip seemed to work best with more street level stuff and soap opera formula. Which isn't so far off given some of the later stuff reprinted in Comics Revue does read like Mary Worth.... oddly ironic given the fact that they were trying to sell these with the much more dynamic Todd MacFarlane covers.

I picked up these paperbacks yesterday...

I recall this strip started out at around the same time as the Spiderman one didn't it? Originally starring the JLA before morphing into a Superman solo strip (post Christopher Reeve movie?)

Just to bring it back to Mego, I wonder if there was any end run by DC to secure the "World's Greatest Superheroes" trademark that Mego gave to them and Marvel.

I had totally forgotten that Marvel also had Howard the Duck and Hulk comic strips too.

Larry Leiber... Stan's Brother! In recent years he's drawn the Spiderman comic strip hasn't he?

steve gerber never really got much of a break did he?
