    Advice on cleaning Trek suits

My apologies if this is in the wrong place but I need some expert advice.

I picked up a few loose Trek figures off EBay and a few arrived with some issues not described in the listing. Nothing huge but enough that I am considering a return as what I thought was a decent price now doesn't look as great.

Anyway, my question is this...I have cleaned WGSH costumes with Oxyclean to great effect but I have never cleaned a Trek costume. The figure I was most excited about was McCoy and he appears to have a glue stain on his collar. If I submerge the costume, will that remove the Trek sticker (it doesn't have the foil, just the base ensignia). also, how will it affect the foil around the sleeve?

Thanks so much for any advice you can give me!

Is the foil sewn on or glued on?

Oxyclean works pretty well, although I've had great results using a small amount of Dawn dishwashing detergent.

A fat drop, right on top of the stain (while it's wet from lukewarm water), and gently work it in with your fingers.

Dawn makes a lot of suds, so you don't need much.

It might not get the whole stain out on the first try, but it should get most of it.

Are you using Oxyclean powder or the liquid?

      Thanks JediJaida,

Thats a good question...I think they are glued. I never knew Trek had sewn on ensignias. Learn something new every time i visit! Two are on T1 bodies and the rest on T2.

I've always used the powder and let the costumes soak for a few hours. It lifts dirt off but stains are harder and sometimes impossible to remove.

          The insignias were glued.

The stripes, I think, were sewn on.

Most of the insiginia are glued on and I've never had one come off with oxyclean and water. There is a later release of Trek figures in the late 70's that had the insiginia heat sealed on. Not sure how those do in the wash, never tried one.

This will probably get me ridiculed, but has never failed me with any vintage figure clothes, apart from Gabriel's Lone Ranger: I cover the inside and outside of the article with Zout and work it all over it with a soft toothbrush, making sure to get the whole garment. Then I put it in a mesh "lingerie bag" and toss it in the wash and then let it air dry.

I've found the Lone Ranger outfits are prone to some type of dry rot and rip very easily, if they haven't been taken care of. I'm guessing it has something to do with being organic fibers or something. Synthetic stuff like Trek costumes seem to take a beating quite well.
